Contingency recruiting is binary. You either make the placement or you lose. This is a thought I sometimes buy into when things are less than ideal, and I let my competitive nature drive my mental approach. It's a terrible perspective though, and it's completely shortsighted. Like any sales career, recruiting is ultimately about forming genuine, long-term relationships. I've had many instances of failing to successfully place a candidate in the first (or second and third 😐) role I've worked on for a new client, but those "misses" have gone a long way in forging trust and valuable communication between us. The clients appreciated my honesty, transparency and the amount of information I provided about the candidates I presented, and those clients a few years later will interview almost every candidate I submit to them. Likewise, I've submitted candidates to multiple roles without ultimately have them receive an offer. But they valued my communication, my help with prepping them for interviews and my honesty, and they've made invaluable introductions to hiring managers and other candidates that have resulted in placements. Recruiting is the ultimate long game. Whatever cliche you want to apply works. Receiving news that you weren't selected for a position can be tough, but please don't take it personally or direct your frustration (or sometimes anger) towards recruiters. 🙏 - I once had a candidate who reacted strongly to not being chosen for a position. - Despite performing well in our initial interview, another candidate stood out during the next round with the hiring manager. - The candidate called me and were (understandably) upset after getting the feedback that we’re not moving forward with them. Note that there can be various reasons why you might not secure a position, even after what seemed like a promising start.💡 From specific skill sets required for the role to cultural fit within the team or organization, many factors come into play.
