ð¿ Bellway Homes Steps Up for Biodiversity! ðð¡ ð¸Exciting news from Bellway, as they join forces with environmental conservation charity Plantlife International to boost biodiversity across their sites! ð¦ð¡The Newcastle-based developer is on a mission to introduce more natural habitats, designing show home gardens with wild plants, insects, and birds. The goal? To inspire buyers to continue this eco-friendly trend in their own spaces. ð Bellway commits to achieving a 10% biodiversity net gain on all new schemes submitted from July 2023 onwards. They're developing 'design codes' in collaboration with Plantlife, setting rules for sustainable development. ðð±As biodiversity laws approach in January, requiring developers to measure and provide a 10% biodiversity gain, Bellway's proactive approach aligns with the evolving industry standards. ð³Neil Beamsley, Bellway Group Head of Biodiversity, emphasizes the importance of enhancing biodiversity, not only for the environment but also for the mental health benefits associated with being close to nature. ð£ï¸ð¿What are your thoughts on this initiative? ð https://lnkd.in/eUFcTbjb #Bellway #Biodiversity #SustainableLiving #NatureInUrbanSpaces #BiodiversityNetGain #Landscaping #HousingDevelopment #GreenSpaces

Today is World Nature Conservation Day, and it's all about raising awareness for protecting natural habitats and preserving biodiversity. Sustainability is in the core of our foundations. We're incredibly proud to team up with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), an organisation doing groundbreaking work to conserve animals and their habitats worldwide. Weâre committed to partnering with ZSL in enabling them to run conservation projects to protect endangered species and promote biodiversity. Here are just some of the great things the teams have done to support their amazing work: - We procure all our timber from FSC companies with chain of custodies provided for ZSL - We created mud shoes for the conservation team so they could do their work out in the estuaries and wetlands (we have done a post about this before tho as attached) - We have created transport crates for the partula snails to travel back to Polynesia â to date 15,000 of these have been reintroduced together with the international zoo community Beyond our work with ZSL, weâre committed to sustainability in all areas of our business: Reducing our carbon footprint with electric vehicles. Implementing energy-efficient solutions for us and our clients. Promoting sustainable sourcing and cutting down on waste. #NatureConservation | #Sustainability | #ConservationProjects | #FacilitiesManagement | #EcoPartnerships | #GreenInitiatives | #SustainableBusiness | #ESG

Happy World Rewilding Day! #HopeintoAction Countries worldwide, particularly in Europe, are abuzz with conversations about #rewilding. This growing momentum signifies a collective recognition of the importance of restoring balance to our ecosystems. At its core, rewilding holds immense promise for conservation, offering a pathway towards #RejuvenatingLandscapes and safeguarding biodiversity. Rewilding, often synonymous with "rewinding" ecosystems to a more natural state, presents a viable solution for addressing ecological degradation. By #reintroducing native species, restoring habitats, and allowing natural processes to unfold, rewilding can breathe new life into depleted landscapes. It fosters resilience within ecosystems, enabling them to adapt to environmental changes and thrive. It's crucial to acknowledge that while rewilding holds significant benefits, it should not be viewed as a one-size-fits-all solution. Rather, it must be approached with nuance and complemented by other conservation strategies. Preservation of #existinghabitats, sustainable land management practices, and addressing root causes of biodiversity loss are equally vital components of conservation efforts. Moreover, successful rewilding initiatives must prioritize #Inclusivity and #CommunityEngagement. Local communities often hold invaluable knowledge about their environments and play a pivotal role in conservation efforts. Involving #communities in decision-making processes fosters a sense of ownership and ensures that rewilding projects align with local needs and values.

Do we need another National Park? The recent news on the Governmentâs ambitions to create a new National Park (NP) has been greeted as âbig and excitingâ, however, should we be focusing on delivering the potential of our current NPs instead of drawing more lines on a map? ðº Currently zero NPs are fully delivering in their functions,(in my opinion), and during a climate and biodiversity crisis this should be first priority âï¸ To start, how about we: âï¸ Significantly increase the funding for NPs to enable statutory bodies to drive biodiversity recovery on the ground. ð² Improve the condition of our nationally designated sites inside NPs, which are in worse condition than those outside, through regular management responsibilities and better landowner interaction. ð¸ Provide stronger duties to secure action from stakeholders to contribute to the delivery of NPâs statutory purposes; and strengthen Management Plans. ð¿Support these landscapes ability to contribute to our international obligations (30x30), including through a requirement for a local target for contributing to the national 30% target and a map and plan to achieve this target. The legislation underpinning National Parks is meant to âconserve and enhance natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritageâ, however, this simply is not being delivered and needs to capture the wider concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem services, while ensuring local communities and landowners are fully on board. #lookingafterwhatwehave #nationalparks #biodiversity #timetoact

When was the last time you heard a sparrow chirping? World sparrow day! Sparrows, a symbol of urban biodiversity, are often overlooked in local municipal planning. Despite their ability to adapt to human presence, our construction projects have displaced them from their habitats. High-rise buildings and extensive construction have made it increasingly rare to encounter these beloved birds in urban areas. Sustainable practices in urban planning are essential, and municipal laws should include accountability for urban biodiversity conservation. #worldsparrowday #housesparrow #sparrow #ibs #icfaibusinessschool #bschool #biodiversity #urbanbiodiversity #sustainable #municipalplanning

This week at cabinet we passed our 'First Consideration' - which sets out the actions we are going to take for biodiversity. Whilst a statutory requirement, it sets our ambition and strategies to contribute towards national and international targets of protecting 30% of nature by 2030. When I first took on the role as Portfolio holder for Biodiversity and Environmental Services, we didn't have a strategy for biodiversity, nor any biodiversity baseline across the areas we manage. I'm pleased these are both now embedded into our community plan and future going forward. Pg 43 of this report sets out the positive actions we've undertaken in the last year including approving and adopting 2 BNG policies and declaring our #Motion4theOcean. The rest of the report outlines our ambitions to build on this momentum. I encourage you all to have a read. I want to thank my colleagues - both in Castle House - and those who work tirelessly to look after our parks and green spaces, and who are creating habitats for wildlife, planting trees and helping shape our policies. https://lnkd.in/eGgDCqMB *image of the new wonderful wildlife-themed art installation at Newark Royal Market.unity plan and future going forward. #firstconsideration #biodoversity #BNG

Really interesting article from my Vickery Holman colleague Alice Williams on National Landscapes â formally known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). Did you know there are 5 of them in #Devon? The name change aligns with ambitious goals to contribute significantly to the international â30 by 30â commitment, which aims to conserve a minimum of 30% of land and sea for biodiversity by 2030. https://lnkd.in/gF26yHHq

This past Sunday, the Ecolution team celebrated the beauty and diversity of our world's wildlife for World Wildlife Day. Here's why raising awareness around wildlife & biodiversity regeneration is so important in 2024: As a society, we rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet our basic needs. This is why the current rate of biodiversity loss is concerning. The construction industry needs to shift from merely preserving biodiversity to regenerating it. This means installing landscaping that regenerates surrounding biodiversity in the built environment. Currently, the Green Star V2 rating system is creating a glimmer of hope: By focusing on awarding projects that incorporate regenerative design principles, specifically enhancing habitat, V2 mobilises projects to be active in creating sustainable legacies. In light of this, we renew our commitment to protecting wildlife and preserving their habitats by promoting building construction practices that: 1ï¸â£Support conservation initiatives 2ï¸â£Advocate for sustainable practices 3ï¸â£Encourage responsible stewardship of natural resources. This way, we support the future of our planet for generations to come. What are you doing to raise awareness? Please share your thoughts with us! #WorldWildlifeDay #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity #Ecosystems #NatureAwareness #ProtectOurPlanet #WildlifeProtection #SpeciesConservation

Did you know that wildlife habitat corridors are essential for cities? Urban areas are increasingly developing, resulting in the loss or fragmentation of natural habitats. Biodiversity, however, thrives on interconnectedness. Creating wildlife habitat corridors in cities can help support this biodiversity. In Australia, approximately 500 threatened species reside in cities. By establishing corridors within these urban areas, we can help prevent many of these species from becoming extinct. Our Nature Blocks initiative strives to encourage people throughout Australia to restore nature and build essential habitat corridors in towns and cities. By creating spaces for nature in your backyard or balcony, you can participate in a movement that supports urban biodiversity. For more insights on urban biodiversity, check out this Arup report which mentions our work: https://lnkd.in/eKs-bnWp ð Download our CVA Community app and start creating your own Nature Block today: https://lnkd.in/gQV6VQrK Our Nature Blocks⢠initiative is proudly supported by the Bupa Foundation. #ConservationVolunteers #CVA #UrbanNature #Biodiversity #BiodiversityMatters #NatureBlocks
