HHS Region 10 hosted OPA for a community discussion on Take Action for Adolescents: A Call to Action for Adolescent Health and Well-Being. Representatives of state and local health care providers and youth-serving organizations joined this community dialogue to emphasize a commitment to supporting young people. They discussed how policies and practices can make it difficult to coordinate efforts and identified mental health as one of the biggest challenges facing young people today. Participants shared: - Ways that their organizations could promote adolescent health and well-being; - The expertise and resources they bring to that effort; - Groups or organizations they want to partner with; and - Perspectives that have historically been missing from the conversation. July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to the cultural stigma and lack of access to mental health care services. Throughout the month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will focus on promoting tools and resources addressing the stigma about mental health. This month, use #MinorityMentalHealthAwareness to spread the message of challenging stigmas and advocate for equitable and inclusive mental healthcare. In 2008, the U.S. named July as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, yet more than 20% of adults continue to live with mental illnessâ many of whom not getting the care they need. Lack of treatment for mental health challenges can stem from a variety of factors, including lack of access to adequate healthcare specifically for underrepresented communities. So, how can we bridge the racial health gap? Three experts in the healthcare industry Nora Triola, Ph.D., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., David Cade, and Julie KennedyOehlert weighed in on the discussion, sharing how organizations and individual service providers can improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Recommendations included: Nurturing diverse healthcare providers Establishing new ways of listening Speaking up in healthcare conversations Fixing structural barriers to healthcare For additional information about these recommendations, check out the full article linked in the comments below. #MentalHealthAwareness #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #HealthcareEquity

Reflecting on the strides made in mental healthcare throughout 2023 fills us with hope and inspiration, especially as we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month. From policy changes in Congress supporting better reimbursements for licensed professionals to the increased recognition of the invaluable role played by peer-support specialists and community healthcare centers, our nation celebrated numerous accomplishments. Yet, amid these victories, a sobering reality remainsâmany Americans still grapple with limited access to crucial mental health care services. Despite our advancements in knowledge and advocacy for mental health treatment, the persistent shortage of qualified psychiatrists nationwide continues to hinder progress. As we move forward into 2024, let's build upon the momentum of 2023's achievements and redouble our efforts to address the root causes of mental health access challenges. Together, through continued collaboration, innovation, and dedication, we can ensure that every individual in need receives the compassionate and effective care they deserve. During Mental Health Awareness Month, weâre thinking about how oral and mental health are often siloed and seen as separate from other types of health care. In reality, they are both inextricably linked to overall health and well-being. At NCOHC, we believe integrated care structures lead to more equitable, accessible health care. Oral and mental health are essential to whole-person health, and our bodies benefit most when our medical, mental health, and dental needs are all met through a âwhole-bodyâ approach. Not only do our medical, dental, and mental health needs overlap, but deficiencies in any of these areas can have serious impacts. https://buff.ly/47ta2PR #oralhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmonth

ð¡ Speaker Spotlight ð¡ (5 CEs) | Virtual | Oct. 5 | Session Title: The Reciprocal Effects of Attachment and PMADs Abstract: Perinatal and Infant mental health outcomes are recognized as intertwined; however, discussions about one frequently only briefly mention the other. The available research suggests that the bond between a new parent and infant are drastically impacted by one another. PMADs are considered to have detrimental effects on infants' formation of their attachment with their primary caregivers. Conversely, positive interactions with their baby have shown to have regulatory effects on caregivers suffering from PMADs. Further, as more positive interactions occur, they build on establishing a secure attachment. As we, as providers, use attachment to both identify and intervene with PMADs, we have a chance at reducing the unwanted or harmful effects that PMADs can have on the entire family system. #SpeakerSpotlight #AttachmentTheory #PMADs #PerinatalMentalHealth #InfantMentalHealth #SecureAttachment #ParentInfantBonding #FamilyWellness #MentalHealthSupport #PerinatalCare #PositiveParenting #CaregiverSupport #MentalHealthOutcomes #AttachmentAndMentalHealth #FamilySystem https://lnkd.in/g7KUDwkP
