Observed today, April 30th, is National APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) Awareness Day. This is the first ever national awareness day for AMKD, a serious condition that disproportionately affects people AMKD is a type of kidney disease caused by variants (changes) in the APOL1 (apolipoprotein L1) gene. Certain APOL1 variants have been linked with different types of kidney disease, including a higher risk of high blood pressure-related chronic kidney disease (CKD) or kidney failure, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), and HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN). Our new study is out. We have characterized the contribution of 229 unique #bacteria from the human #microbiome for their role in protein stability. Our results reveal bacteria that are proteoprotective and those that are proteotoxic, opening new opportunities to treat protein conformational diseases such as #Alzheimer's or #Parkinson's. More exciting, we found protective bacteria that activate the heat shock response, a mechanism that suppresses protein misfolding associated with neurodegenerative disease.
