HHS Region 10 hosted OPA for a community discussion on Take Action for Adolescents: A Call to Action for Adolescent Health and Well-Being. Representatives of state and local health care providers and youth-serving organizations joined this community dialogue to emphasize a commitment to supporting young people. They discussed how policies and practices can make it difficult to coordinate efforts and identified mental health as one of the biggest challenges facing young people today. Participants shared: - Ways that their organizations could promote adolescent health and well-being; - The expertise and resources they bring to that effort; - Groups or organizations they want to partner with; and - Perspectives that have historically been missing from the conversation. July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to the cultural stigma and lack of access to mental health care services. Throughout the month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will focus on promoting tools and resources addressing the stigma about mental health. This month, use #MinorityMentalHealthAwareness to spread the message of challenging stigmas and advocate for equitable and inclusive mental healthcare. In 2008, the U.S. named July as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, yet more than 20% of adults continue to live with mental illnessâ many of whom not getting the care they need. Lack of treatment for mental health challenges can stem from a variety of factors, including lack of access to adequate healthcare specifically for underrepresented communities. So, how can we bridge the racial health gap? Three experts in the healthcare industry Nora Triola, Ph.D., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., David Cade, and Julie KennedyOehlert weighed in on the discussion, sharing how organizations and individual service providers can improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Recommendations included: Nurturing diverse healthcare providers Establishing new ways of listening Speaking up in healthcare conversations Fixing structural barriers to healthcare For additional information about these recommendations, check out the full article linked in the comments below. #MentalHealthAwareness #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #HealthcareEquity

Our latest research highlights the significant barriers that low-income families face in accessing specialized mental health services for children and adolescents, despite Australia's promise of universal health coverage. We found that children from low-income families are less likely to receive psychological therapy for anxiety and depression, primarily due to high out-of-pocket costs for clinical psychologists. This demonstrates how financial obstacles can prevent children from receiving the care they need, further widening the socioeconomic gap. This underscores the urgent need for policy interventions to remove financial barriers and ensure equitable mental healthcare access for all children. At Brightline, we're deeply committed to youth mental health care, and our exceptional team plays a vital role in fulfilling that commitment. Brightline execs are passionate about elevating youth mental health care and steadfast in their cause. In this month's Bright Minds feature, we're thrilled to introduce you to Brightline Chief Clinical Officer - Myra Altman, PhD., as she shares her insights on supporting youth mental health by increasing access. "We are experiencing an unprecedented youth mental health crisis and it is critical to think holistically about how to care for all youth. An important part of this is making sure that we are meeting youth and families where they are with services that feel approachable to them. This means thinking about prevention as well as clinical supports and services. In the realm of prevention this question to me is about how do we support kids before their concerns rise to the level of clinical need - there is now great data that supports the use of coaching for these needs, which is an incredible step forward for the field that Brightline really helped pioneer. And then of course providing high quality and evidence-based clinical services for those who need it. Having all these services available in one platform is also really important for ensuring that people have access to the right care over time as their needs evolve." Myra stewards Brightline's commitment to clinical quality, provider satisfaction, clinical research, overall care model development, and safe innovation for care services. Bend Healthâs latest research study published in JMIR Publications highlights the positive impact of Bendâs digital mental health care on disordered eating symptoms among adolescents. The study analyzed data from 392 youth ages six to 17 who participated in Bendâs virtual behavioral health coaching only for at least three months. This research comes at a crucial time as weâve seen eating disorders among teen girls more than doubled during the pandemic (https://lnkd.in/gzDursiK), worsening an existing critical public health issue and adding an estimated annual economic burden of $70 billion for families and hospitals (https://lnkd.in/gkzGuA_G). Iâm proud to be a part of the work Bend is doing to combat this crisis and foster happier, healthier kids as well as resilient families. Itâs National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, another time for us to reflect on the specific mental health challenges racial and ethnic minorities face, and pledge action to overcome the obstacles they encounter to receiving care. According to the FDA Office of Womenâs Health, those include less access to treatment and stigma, among others. As a health system guided by the principles of compassion, dignity and respect, and which cares for people of all backgrounds, we continue to find ways to close gaps in care and improve health equity. This yearâs theme is Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities and Connections, LEARN more about it and ways to take action from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) -> https://bit.ly/3XZgf4U #MJHSdei #SourceForBetterHealth #MinorityHealth #NMHM24
