July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! In 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives first designated the observance as âBebe Moore National Minority Mental Health Awareness Monthâ in honor of the African American novelistâs groundbreaking work to change the way we approach mental health in underserved communities. Today, racial and ethnic minorities continue to face barriers to mental health care, including cultural stigma, lack of access to culturally competent care, and systemic inequalities. These challenges can exacerbate mental health issues, making awareness, education, and advocacy all the more crucial. The #DCGTeam develops mental health outreach campaigns that do just that on behalf of our federal government clients. Join us in raising awareness about mental health equity and inclusivity. Our latest research highlights the significant barriers that low-income families face in accessing specialized mental health services for children and adolescents, despite Australia's promise of universal health coverage. We found that children from low-income families are less likely to receive psychological therapy for anxiety and depression, primarily due to high out-of-pocket costs for clinical psychologists. This demonstrates how financial obstacles can prevent children from receiving the care they need, further widening the socioeconomic gap. This underscores the urgent need for policy interventions to remove financial barriers and ensure equitable mental healthcare access for all children. Thank you, Apex Benefits, for highlighting National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Here are some significant facts, cited from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants website: - Approximately 23% of all adults in the U.S. have a mental illness - Although rates of mental illness in some BIPOC groups are comparable or slightly lower than in White people, mental illness among BIPOC is likely to be more persistent and BIPOC often bear a disproportionately high burden of disability resulting from mental illnesses. Research suggests that a lack of culturally sensitive screening tools that detect mental illness, coupled with structural barriers could contribute to underdiagnosis of mental illness among people of color. - People who identify as being two or more races (25%) are most likely to report any mental illness within the past year than any other race/ethnic group. - In 2022, among adults with any mental illness, Hispanic (40%), Black (38%), and Asian (36%) adults were less likely than White adults (56%) to receive mental health services. Let's work together to change the stigma! #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #BIPOC #DEI #MentalHealth #EmployeeBenefits

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month shines a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by minority communities in accessing mental health care. Recognized every July, this month calls for increased awareness, advocacy, and action to address disparities in mental health treatment and support. Minority communities often experience higher rates of mental health conditions due to various social, economic, and cultural factors. Yet, they are less likely to receive adequate care or seek help due to stigma, language barriers, and lack of culturally competent services. It's crucial to use this month to educate ourselves and others about these disparities, advocate for policies that promote equitable access to mental health resources, and support initiatives that prioritize cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in mental health care. Let's stand together to amplify marginalized voices, promote mental health equity, and build a society where everyone receives the care and support they need to thrive. Together, we can break down barriers and create a future where mental health care is truly accessible and inclusive for all. ðð§ #MinorityMentalHealthAwareness #EndDisparities #CulturalCompetence #HealthEquity #SoundCommunityServices

Today for Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 we are happy to share some key points from the social/systemic summary of Dr. Janet Williams qualitative research "What Happens When The Abused Child Becomes A Mother?". This research was the key driver in the development of Malone Trauma Network, as it is evident there simply are not enough services to meet the trauma-informed services needed to treat perinatal women with ACEs. We strive to make a big difference in filling this gap in Northern Ireland. #MaternalMentalHealthAwarenessWeek #ACEs #PerinatalMentalHealth
