Here’s my take on the new Apple Vision Pro after a recent demo: 1. This is a very low-cost research and development tool…NOT an expensive consumer device. 2. ⁠It’s like going from DOS to Windows. Spatial Computing can completely shift how we create, consume, and compute in the future. 3. ⁠The headset is the least interesting part of the experience, It just enables the experience to be possible with today’s technology. 4. ⁠With Apple’s focus on the interconnectivity of its devices, this sets up a possibility where technology can serve how humans wish to live, instead of humans adapting to technology. 5. The fact that you can dial in your focus to Compute Reality vs. Human Reality reduces the dystopian nature of this product. There’s still a host of ethical, physiological, and mental health questions it brings up. Will I get one? No The thing is super heavy and my vision also felt “off” for about 20 minutes after the short demo. Again, this is a tool, not a product. The real products are on the way. What are your thoughts? Finally... after a year of anticipating, predicting, and hoping, I got my hands on an Apple Vision Pro. I just walked into an Apple Store and bought it off the shelf. Easy peasy. It was a surreal moment. I’ve spent the past decade trying to make spatial computing real. Trying to make it matter. For most of that time, the average person just didn’t care, didn’t get it, or didn’t think it’d ever be a thing. And then suddenly…. here was the defining retail space of our generation, flipped into a spatial computing shrine; a table full of Apple's Vision Pro’s (AVP) stretched across the middle of the store, videos about the promise of spatial computing played on every wall, and a line of people wrapped around the walls, waiting for their glimpse of the future. In the middle of the store was a ‘demo lounge’. People of all types were getting immersed: kids, parents, grandparents, business types, artistic types, tech nerds, jocks, you name it. That was the moment that it really hit me; seeing all of their reactions. It was a cacophony of oooo’s, aaahhh’s, wow’s, holy shit’s, omg’s, unreal’s, amazing’s, etc. All these years I’ve wondered if I was crazy. I’ve wondered if I was wasting the prime years of my career. I’ve wondered if all the countless demos, prototypes, events, presentations, business trips, and late night rants would ever amount to anything. But in that moment, I was awash with excitement and relief. I was re-energized. I realized… it was going to be okay. I’m not crazy and this hasn’t been a waste of time. Spatial computing is going to be a thing and its going to change the world. While we still have a ways to go… the dress rehearsal is over. It's been about four months since the Apple Vision Pro launched in the USA, and now here in Australia the Apple stores are letting people experience it. As a long-time optimist about the potential for virtual reality (or, uh, spatial computing), I was impressed by what I saw. Of course, there are many issues with Apple's first device in this category, not the least being the price, but as a technical demonstrator it is frankly amazing. I encourage Australians who are involved in tech to try it out themselves (see https://lnkd.in/ecp4w2B5). It was a heavily curated experience, e.g. I was seated in a well-lit environment with an expert on hand to fix any technical issues, but could still get a good sense of the product. Nothing has significantly changed my opinion from April (https://lnkd.in/eNy7ZcBx) that was based on my experience with other companies' products and analyst/media reports, although I am perhaps more bullish now on the use case of a virtual office environment, as I didn't experience any motion blur issues. The free demo session takes up to 1hr from when you walk in, and you can watch some short 2D and 3D movies, see the facial expressions of people looking at your wearing a headset, move Safari and other windows around, have a dinosaur roar at your face, watch basketball as if you're on the court, and experience vertigo with a slackliner above a canyon. Of course, #AppleVisionPro is not the end of the story. As with any groundbreaking technology, it will inspire other companies to create their own versions of spatial computers and compete for the market share. This will lead to more #innovation, more #diversity, and more #affordability in the field of #MixedReality. As the technology improves, the devices will become smaller, lighter, and more comfortable to wear. They will also become more integrated with our everyday lives, and more accepted by society. Imagine a world where everyone wears a spatial computer, and can access information, entertainment, and communication at any time, anywhere. A world where we can customize our reality, and share it with others. A world where we can be social or “non-social” as we please, and still be connected. What do you think about the new Apple Vision Pro technology? 🤔 For those of you who might not have seen it yet - the Apple Vision Pro is a spatial computer that blends digital content and apps into your physical space, and lets you navigate using your eyes, hands, and voice. Basically bringing your screen world to life! I've heard mixed reviews about the quality and realism of the technology, so I think Apple might have a way to go before it blends seamlessly into the real world. But surely if we've got access to technology like this now, it can't be long till the online and real worlds blend 🤯 Its so interesting to see technological advancements like this coming into play during our lifetime. Does anyone else think this is the stuff of movies not reality?
