On this Labor Day, more often than not, we are continuing to grapple with shoestring resources that typically accrue for community organizing and capacity building efforts within public agency led processes. All in service of improving and strengthening our cities and regions: better access to food, homes, transit, parks, schools and jobs, stronger adaptation and resilience preparation to the ill effects of climate change and other emergent community needs. It doesnât have to be this way. As novel examples illustrate well across several community constellations in California aloneâAllensworth Progressive Association in Allensworth, 40 x 40 Council in Oakland, Santa Ana Shared Financing Collective in Santa Ana and othersâcommunities are flipping the script and orchestrating the future of their own neighborhoods. When we as communities assert power and articulate our collective visions we can attract resources in abundance. This is no mirage! This is a snapshot of an alternate reality that can be true for more communities and must be a reason to not mourn but celebrate todayâthe promise held within communityâs collective labor. #CommunityVision #CommunityPower #AbundantResources #LaborDay

Weâre pleased to share a new impact report for the East Metro Main Street Economic Revitalization Program, which supported 42 Saint Paul nonprofits and businesses that faced immense challenges the past four years due to the pandemic, civil unrest and other obstacles. With support from F. R. Bigelow Foundation and other funding partners, the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development granted $3.7 million to nonprofits and $3.3 million to businesses in the Snelling-University-Rice Cultural District, the East Side community and along West Seventh Street in Saint Paul. 100% of the funded projects serve communities that have been historically under- and dis-invested by traditional funding, and 85% of the projects are owned or led by people of color. Weâre proud to have been a partner in this program and support the vitality of East Metro communities. Grant $$ available to Maryland Small Business Owners! Through $10 million in small business and community development grants, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development plans to target investments to activate vacant spaces in business corridors and support small businesses with start up or expansion funds while creating jobs and increasing local economic activity. There are two paths that the grant funding can be accessed: economic development entities can apply for Project Restore 2.0, which will incentivize commercial investment in downtowns, Main Streets and other business districts by providing funding for entities to subgrant to businesses. Or eligible new and expanding small businesses in designated Sustainable Communities can apply for funding directly through Business Boost. https://lnkd.in/e-AYvsMX

I'm a big advocate for building new housing. I've developed housing on church land in the past and I have a number of projects in the pipeline currently. Some of the churches in our RootedGood Good Futures Accelerator are developing affordable housing as a way to serve their community. BUT developing housing on church land is not a magic solution. It is far from easy. It isn't always the best idea for use of church land. And most of all, it is not the responsibility of churches alone to solve our nation's affordable housing crisis. This Bloomberg article takes a good look at some of the challenges that limit the extent to which churches can address affordable housing using their land. #goneforgood #goodfutures #affordablehousing #propertydevelopment

The CFEK Communities Committee recently met to review a number of great applications from across our region and had the tough decision of choosing three nonprofits to receive $5,000 each to support their Community Economic Development (CED) projects.
