🤚🏼 Hands up if you are a people pleaser! Me, me, me. Is being a People Pleaser a bad thing?  💁🏼♀️ It has served me well over the years. I’m really good at working out what people want, what they need to hear and what will support them, this has worked for me particularly well as a fundraiser managing multiple donors, through cultivation and stewardship. I’m good at taking lots of research and information and providing the right information, to the right person, in the right way. 🤝 I know lots of fundraisers are PP’s because they’ve told me, and having this skill means that people like you, because you provide what they need, when they need it, in a format that works for them. 🌑 However, the downside, or as we coaches & Jung like to call it, the Shadow side of this is that you find it really difficult to say no to anything, you put yourself and your needs last, you struggle to put boundaries in place and this can lead to overwhelm, over work, stress, emotional exhaustion and ultimately, burnout. 😢 The hard thing to hear about people pleasing is that it is manipulative, because the PP has a specific outcome in mind. You want to ensure people have a specific perception about you, a perception that you control. Working in the charity sector often feels like attempting a rooftop trampoline jump, only to have gravity intervene. But today wasn't one of those days. Small wins keep me and the Radical Recruit team going. Todays win was reconnecting with a young Radical who is full of potential but has, for the last few years, faced self-imposed barriers. Limiting beliefs and the tendency to self sabotage so whatever ‘good’ was happening couldn’t be taken away from him. The cycle is real. It’s also incredibly sad and a huge waste of human life. Anyway, I attended a counselling session with him and the incredible Dr. Dharshi of Leap Psychology, who generously supports our cause pro bono. (She’s a real life angel) My role was to outline the challenges as I see them to help get the conversation started. I’ve no doubt most of what I said wasn’t easy to hear. And yet, he stayed and he engaged. Despite the discomfort he must have felt. After I downloaded my brain and left the call be and Dr Dharshi got to work. They spent time discussing my comments, agreeing priorities for their future sessions and planned how they’d use theor time together. In just 15 minutes, we made a big impact. While many issues demand hours of effort and very often can’t be solved despite our best efforts, moments like this, a brief conversation to guide someone back on track, make it all worthwhile. What can we all do to help reduce work-related anxiety? Have a laugh. Feeling stressed at work is no joke. So finding moments in your day to share a laugh with those you work with isn't just a good idea; it's essential for a buoyant team spirit.  Having a giggle together releases endorphins, which help to soothe tension and lighten your mental load. And that's not all; it also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie, promoting team bonding and making work happier. So, you want to help a colleague feel less frazzled? Make a brew. Seriously, a well-made cuppa is more than just…a cuppa. It's an act of kindness, a simple gesture that shows your care. Sharing a tea or coffee with a workmate could lift their spirits enough for them to feel like they can open up a little. And that's before you've even got the biscuits out! They may not unload immediately, so try to make it a regular thing. The more quality moments you spend together, the more your colleague will feel secure in your company. Is setting healthy boundaries harder in a nonprofit? It is in our experience. Many of us do nonprofit work to serve causes greater than ourselves. We recognize that we've had many opportunities and want to lend a hand to those who have had fewer. So saying "no" or failing to go the extra mile can feel selfish. When we have coworkers who feel the same way, that can add tremendous social pressure just by the example they're setting. This same phenomenon can lead to burnout or worse, ultimately hurting us and the missions we serve. That's what makes it so important that all nonprofiteers set healthy boundaries.
