Preventing Burnout by Prioritizing Self-Care Itâs not selfish to prioritize self-care - itâs survival. Women leaders often bear the weight of their careers, families, and businesses, leading to constant overwhelm. You donât need to accept every work request to maintain job security! Burnout from workplace stress is at an all-time high, with 42% of the workforce reporting it, according to the latest Future Forum Pulse report. One group especially susceptible to burnout is women. In a revealing study by the Pew Research Center, even women who are the breadwinners engage in more unpaid labor like housework and childcare. When you combine carrying a heavier burden at home with a lack of boundaries at work, itâs easy to understand why many women struggle to keep their heads above water. 1. Shift your mindset. ð§ Setting boundaries isn't selfish. It's a necessity. Once you acknowledge your right to express your needs directly, you are ready to take the next step. 2. Define your priorities. ð©ð©ð¦ð¦ Before setting boundaries at work, define your values and priorities. Ask yourself whether they have shifted over time. This can cover family, projects (in and outside of work), and your personal wellbeing. 3. Determine your limits. â Label your boundaries as hard or soft. Hard Boundaries â Ones you refuse to compromise on.        Soft boundaries are flexibleâ ânice to haveâ versus must-haves. 4. Communicate and be consistent. ð£ Boundaries at work should be communicated clearly, confidently and often. Donât just explain what your boundaries are but also why you need them. Be honest so that your manager and colleagues understand your perspective. Finally, your boundaries will inevitably get violated at some point. When that happens, address it immediately. Itâs better to reinforce your boundaries at that moment rather than wait. 5. Practice saying ânoâ. ð« Being assertive and saying ânoâ takes practice and develops over time. Test out your ânoâ muscle in less intense situations. Here is a work example - âThank you for thinking of me but my manager asked me to prioritize two other projects before I take on anything new.â TL;DR 1. Shift your mindset. 2. How to set boundaries at work without jeopardizing your career Itâs easy to fall into the trap of saying âyesâ all the time at work. You want to make a good impression on your boss, co-workers and clients, right? So you donât hesitate to add another item or two to your to-do list. But as senior contributor Caroline Castrillon wrote in her latest story for Forbes: âWhen your workload exceeds your capacity, it can lead to anxiety, stress and even burnout.â With recent reports finding that burnout at work has reached an all-time highâespecially for womenâitâs more important than ever to set boundaries in order to maintain a work-life balance that works for you. Castrillon recommends the following steps to turn âyesâ into a confident ânoâ without risking your job: Shift your mindset: Recognize that setting boundaries isnât an act of selfishness. Itâs necessary for your well-being. To live without boundaries is to live without the respect you deserve. Determine your limits: Label your boundaries as hard or soft. Hard boundaries are the ones you wonât compromise on, whereas soft boundaries are more flexible. For example, you might make it a goal not to respond to emails after a certain time in the evening, but if a work emergency emerges it is probably a good idea to be available. Practice saying no: Practice makes perfect. Start by testing your ânoâ muscle in low-pressure situations outside of the workplace, like telling a friend you canât hang out this weekend. Gradually level up by using that muscle in a work environment. Imposter Syndrome is a term that resonates with many of us in the workplace. But is it possible that this term has become a catch-all for more nuanced experiences related to growth and cultural fit? I recently caught up with Burnout and Leadership Coach for Women, Maude Burger-Smith to understand more about Imposter Syndrome, what it's caused by and what we can do about it... Here is some of what I learnt >> Imposter Syndrome is not just about feeling inadequate - it's often deeply tied to the environments we work in and the cultural dynamics at play. Hereâs what to consider: ð Individual Context vs. Cultural Mismatch: Are we labelling natural feelings of discomfort or anxiety as Imposter Syndrome when they might actually be reflections of a broader cultural mismatch? For instance, does walking into a predominantly different demographic or feeling out of place in a new role contribute to these feelings? ð± Growth-Related Challenges: Are we addressing the normal, growth-related discomforts that come with new roles or challenges? Feeling uncertain or nervous in a new position might simply be a part of the learning curve rather than a sign of Imposter Syndrome. ð Feedback and Clarity: Do we have clear metrics and feedback mechanisms in place to help individuals understand their performance? A lack of clear expectations and feedback can heighten feelings of inadequacy. ð Leadership Representation: How does the representation of leadership within your organisation impact feelings of belonging? A lack of diversity in leadership might make employees feel they don't fit in or that their perspectives aren't valued. Some questions we can ask ourselves... â Are we attributing our discomfort to Imposter Syndrome when it might be more about the context or the cultural environment? âHow can we better support new hires and employees transitioning into new roles to normalise their growth-related anxieties? âDo we have a culture of regular and constructive feedback that helps employees understand their performance and growth areas? âWhat steps can we take to ensure our leadership reflects the diverse backgrounds of our team members? Letâs rethink how we approach and support those who experience Imposter Syndrome. Sometimes, the solution might not be in changing the individual but in transforming the environment they work in.
