While moderating the incredible #INMA2024 last week a number of people told me how terrifying they thought it was to be on stage moderating interviews and panels. I used to feel like that too. But now I love it. Reflecting on more than a decade of conference moderation, here are my top tips if you are asked to moderate. Please share yours too. https://lnkd.in/gs4g5cnD

Fractional Marketing/Communications partner for middle market tech and professional service businesses. 20+ years #ExecutiveCommunications #ThoughtLeadership #Messaging #Channelmarketing #PublicRelations #Media Relations
My friends at CCgroup are masters of media attention at MWC - for those not in the telecom industry thatâs the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona each year. Hope you enjoy their video! MWC brings tens of thousands of senior executives from the top global companies, international governments and trailblazing tech businesses for 4 days in Barcelona. Show floors are packed, the keynotes are amongst some of the most coveted in the tech world. Suffice it to say almost all exhibitors and many people attending want to meet with ~600 media at the show. Industrious reporters have maybe 40 slots at best over their 4-days and most get hundreds of invitations to meet up at the show. Here is how to *win* at MWC 1) Announce your news early in the weeks leading up to the show - once at the show, media are mostly going to focus on the top global telecom/wireless companies. Itâs just a fact of MWC life. They have to come home with news to write about. 2) PR professionals and their clients need to be willing to do the work to create real news - No reporter at huge shows like MWC has time for idle chatting or just to stop by and say hi/hear a thinly veiled sales pitch. They have to come home with news to write about. 3) Reporters are not in the business of writing stories to generate your sales leads. Full stop. Itâs not their job to do your sales teamâs job. While digital marketers have also infiltrated the newsroom and almost all reporters are judged by click throughs to their articles, at the end of the day most journalists are just trying to do their job - write stories their readers actually want to read. (And that editors will pay them to write). 4) Keep your pitches short and very clear. A journalist friend says âIF I actually open the email based on the subject line, each email pitch gets between 3-5 second glance. If I canât figure out your news in the first two sentences chances are my finger is already sitting on the delete button.â She went on to say âNo buzzwords, flowery language and phrases that when you read them out loud just fall flat because weâve heard them over ⦠and over ... We arenât here to write flattering copy about your company just because. We have to come home with news to write about.â 5) Be patient. Most of all, please understand itâs a super tough time in the media industry right now with more and more outlets announcing layoffs that are hitting the editorial staff hard. So many former journalists are now freelancing for multiple outlets and it takes a lot longer to get to a yes. Most reporters have families and mortgages too - They want to come home with news that any of their 4 bosses at various outlets will agree to pay them to write. 6) Donât be a pest. If you reach out to a journalist twice and they donât get back to you, they arenât interested. Get comfortable telling your clients the truth - âOur pitch isnât strong enoughâ is a good place to start.

Identify your core activities! Depending on what your participants want, some activities will be more important for your event than others.  The core event activities are the basis for designing an event that meets the expectations of your participants. Based on our in-depth interviews and observations of various participants and events, we have identified and developed a set of nine core activities. These 9 activities form the building blocks of all knowledge-intensive events. Depending on the goals of your event, you will first need to identify the most important activities which support these goals. This step is crucial since it establishes the foundation for all following steps. In most cases, an event will have around three core activities. The key point here is to focus on the crucial activities that best support your goals, and not to try to select them all. Find out more during our next 45-minute live introduction! Master of Ceremonies ⢠Compére ⢠Panel Moderator ⢠I Host Unforgettable Events for Corporate Leaders, Nonprofits & Global Brands ð¤â¨
PREVIOUS, PRECIOUS!! Interviewer: We have gone through your LinkedIn profile and seen your content. You are good at this. You have also answered our questions satisfactorily. We have just one last question before we wrap this up and get you on board. When was your best event? Can you tell us? Emcee: *after 45 seconds of jaw and head rubs* The ICAN Conference that I hosted in 2022. I consider that event my best so f....... Interviewer: Alright. That would be all for now. Thank you. We will get back to you. While that may be an honest response, you may have just burned yourself at the stake because.... Your last event ought to be your best!! It should be your marker. Every event has to be an upgrade from the previous. Ensure that you use it to challenge and raise your bar. You are as good as the last time you held a microphone. Never forget that! - TM #masterofceremonies #publicspeaker #eventhost
