Do we have the right leaders in higher education? Sarah, Deenie and I just recorded the latest episode of Housed. It'll be out on Friday at 7am but just as a sneak preview, we stray (my fault) from university rankings to the state of leadership in UK universities. I'm talking about VCs. The CEO of a university. They are effectively running businesses turning over almost £1 billion each. More stats and a Linkedin piece to follow on Friday about this but I'm wondering if the leaders of our universities should have more private sector or commercial experience. Having researched it this morning by looking at their leadership teams, only one of the 24 Russell Group of Universities leaders has a commercial or private sector background, the rest are academics who have worked their way up from being subject lecturers to running the university. I'll give you a clue who that one leader is - look to the top of the latest QS World University Rankings. Is it time for change or do we like our universities run as they are? #highered #intled #pbsa #studentaccommodation #university #education #highereducation

The Executive Strategy Programme led by Saïd Business School, University of Oxford delivered an exceptional learning experience on the importance of strategic agility pertinent to school educational leadership. The success of schools is through their strategic agility to rapidly sense and respond to a changing environment by intentionally making strategic moves and adapting the necessary organisational configuration for successful execution. There are three interconnected elements schools can foster to build strategic agility: 1. Strategic sensitivity is the capacity to be attentive to strategic developments as strategy is executed, both within and particularly outside the school. 2. Leadership unity is the ability of the executive team to work together making decisions as swiftly and boldly as necessary. 3. Resource fluidity is the ability to move resources efficiently when needed to capitalise on opportunities and mitigate risks. Schools benefit by establishing collaboration through external partnerships in preparing students for life after school. Schools need a Strategic Plan but the best plan doesnât win. Itâs the best intelligence that wins. Intelligence is the constant assessment of data coming in from the real world that allows schools to solve problems and engage. Making data-driven decisions in higher education is crucial for informed and effective institutional management. Analyzing data on student performance, enrollment trends, and resource allocation enables universities to identify areas for improvement, enhance student outcomes, and optimize operational efficiency. This evidence-based approach empowers academic leaders to make strategic choices that positively impact the overall educational experience and contribute to the long-term success of both students and the institution. #Climbhigher #KeanUniversity #Leadership
