There is POWER in women (and allies) coming together! What a FILLING day attending BCEAâs THRIVE conference! Loved connecting, sharing and learning with women and allies from the industry. â¤ï¸ There was tremendous experience and skills in that room, and what power lies in the community to embrace each other, encourage, advocate and build up the electrical industry with talented women. Although still 3:1 ratio, there is progress and some incredible allies. (We need more!) ð I am grateful to be one of the conference speakers and share on the BCEA LEAN IN circles pilot from 2023/2024 and workshop the group through self-reflection on the theme of mentorship exploring whatâs strong in us, what opportunities need, what learning we need/want and a reflection around their personal board of directors in six roles (Sponsor, Mentor, Cheerleader, Counsellor, Inspiration, Expert). ð It takes courage to allow ourselves to STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN and even more courage sometimes to ACT in our careers by finding the right people that will help us understand our realities, help us create the seed that will allow us to bloom where we are planted or grow forward. ð¼ Remember: Where I am today is my starting point. Who I am today is my starting point. My failures and successes of the past, my fears and hopes of the future are all shadows. Today is my reality, and I'll use it to create my world. Benefits to young people becoming board members In previous Insights we have argued the benefits that accrue to Boards should they expand their member diversity by including younger directors and even youth representatives. But for this to work, younger people need to see the benefits for themselves and their communities to create the desire to engage in a sustained and meaningful way. According to various surveys and reports, there are potential multiple benefits for young people themselves, to the organisations involved and to the broader community. Some of the core motivations for younger people seeking board membership include: ·       making a difference by influencing real outcomes ·       active in decision-making about issues that affect them and their communities ·       improving the lot (services, opportunities, profile) of other young people in the community ·       giving a unique perspective from a demographic that lives in a technologically dynamic environment and will inherit the world and its issues and opportunities Some of the personal benefits of taking on a board role could include: ·       learning about how organisations function from a governance perspective ·       having a lot more responsibility than in their day jobs ·       gaining new knowledge, skills and experience ·       developing greater self-respect and empowerment ·       building contacts and networks Benefits will also accrue to organisations willing to increase their board age diversity by: ·       demonstrating their responsibility to young people ·       make better decisions when informed by a younger perspective ·       knowledge of the organisation by upcoming individuals ·       better business relevant to younger generations ·       increased focus on environmental and humanitarian issues Communities can also benefit by: ·       realising a healthier, more inclusive democracy ·       greater inter-generational understanding and respect ·       a more optimistic outlook for younger generations While all these benefits are impressive, there are many reasons why young people wonât take the step into the boardroom â as we will find out in my next Insight.
