Media coverage of AI often conflates hype and reality, leading to misconceptions that can fuel unnecessary fears or unrealistic hopes about these tools. “Interpreting AI in the News: A Media Literacy Lesson Plan” equips the rising generation for an AI-driven world by fostering a deeper understanding of how the news media portrays these emerging technologies. This educational resource is geared toward high school and junior college students, and it provides teachers with a comprehensive set of assets, including a materials list, sample presentation, and vocabulary guide. At #AspenCyber Summit last week, we had the privilege of hosting principals from all of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, representing Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US. Catch up on a few of the highlights. Australian Signals Directorate's Stephanie Crowe spoke to the importance of risk-management, encouraging senior leaders across industry and government to think of cybersecurity risk management as they would any other enterprise risk. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security's Rajiv Gupta spoke to 80 years of code-making and code-breaking among the alliance, and the critical need for international alignment. Gupta highlighted the coordination between Canada's Cyber Resiliency Goals with Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's Cyber Performance Goals in the US. Meanwhile, National Cyber Security Centre's Lisa Fong spoke to collaboration with others in the alliance to attribute changing threat actor techniques and keep pace with the evolving tech-scape, highlighting rapid diversification in the relationships and tools being brought to the problem set. National Cyber Security Centre’s Felicity Oswald OBE shared the key to succesful collaboration between countries and sectors, saying that partnerships have to start with trust and listening. With a shared vision of a safe internet that allows us to prosper, collaboration isn't so hard, Oswald explained. National Security Agency's David Luber highlighted important work in cyber education and workforce development, explaining that approx. 300 young people join the Agency each summer for a 12-week internship program, contributing to its mission. In a book talk on "Your Face Belongs to Us" at the 2023 Cyber Summit, The New York Times Tech Reporter Kashmir Hill explained how the owner of Madison Square Garden uses Clearview AI facial recognition technology against lawyers who have lawsuits against the company, barring them from entering the venue. Meanwhile, in a session on cyber education, then-President of Stillman College Cynthia Warrick shared her experience navigating a ransomware attack in 2017. After the school was hit, the system crashed, and Stillman, a small HBCU, spent half a million dollars to rebuild it. Another 2023 highlight was the panel on critical infrastructure, where U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Director Puesh Kumar put cybersecurity threats to systems like our waterways and electrical grids in context, calling it an engineering problem. In a much-awaited session looking ahead to the 2024 US elections, State of Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson gave a peek behind the curtain of elections administration. As Benson explained, for several elections, Michigan has kept a field team within 5 minutes of local polling places. In a special session that included a bagpiper solo, Birds Aren't Real Public Information Officer Peter McIndoe shared what he’s learned about conspiracy theories: what drives people is belonging rather than belief. The stakes for this year’s elections couldn’t be higher. Trust in basic democratic institutions, particularly among communities of color, has been systematically eroded by bad actors intent on sowing discord and confusion. Meanwhile, rising hateful rhetoric online increasingly translates directly into violence in the real world. To future-proof our democracy, tech leaders will need to engage more directly with the communities their products impact. Last month, we brought together over 30 leaders from a diverse range of backgrounds for a frank discussion of the impact of technology on historically marginalized communities, and their access to vote. Together with experts across tech, government, elections administration, and civil rights, we examined new forms of democratic suppression that have been enabled by AI and other emerging technologies.
