The World Economic Forum emphasizes this important point "Shoring up trust will be a key goal of cybersecurity efforts over the next decade. The online spread of mis- and disinformation are now core cybersecurity concerns." A "Trust Registry" that contains "Trust Labels" for software applications and IoT devices is one key, but missing "link" in the chain of trust that is needed to address the need for radical transparency. CISA Director Jen Easterly speaks about the need for radical transparency to help parties protect themselves from dangerous software found in app stores and elsewhere on the Internet. I agree Madam Director; let's make radical transparency the top priority in 2024 and provide consumers the help they need, following the recommendations from the WEF: https://lnkd.in/eHSg2qKY

Okay, I don't want to make you paranoid, but did you know your coffeemaker could be sharing information about you over the internet? This research partnership between Dalhousie and Calian IT & Cyber Solutions is revealing how #internetofthings enabled devices and appliances send data to unintended parties. Watch what you say around your refrigerator!
Internet-connected devices capture every our word and keystroke, yet the destination and use of this data are unclear. Dal computer scientist Dr. Nur Zincir-Heywood is assessing these risks through a corporate partnership with the engineering firm Calian IT & Cyber Solutions: https://bit.ly/48DH9Sq

Interesting twist on red teaming: Bring the practice of hunting forward to the private sector. https://lnkd.in/eYrT4k46 âSpecterOps, which was was founded in 2017 by a group of mostly former military hackers, instead develops tools to help companies simulate attacks and develop so-called red teams at their companies who attack their own networks to find weak pointsâ¦.â I would be very curious to see over the long term (1) whether entities like SpecterOps are able to build capacity within the organizations they are helping and (2) whether the red cell is also identifying institutional as well as network gaps (i.e. personnel gaps, short staffing, policy gaps, a pattern of risk being pushed down to folks who donât have the authority to make big changes). Vulnerability is so much more than forgetting to update the default settings on the IoT. I hope groups like SpectreOps can help companies address the total picture.

Navigating the Evolving Cybersecurity Landscape ð In today's digital age, emerging technologies like 5G, IoT, and AI are revolutionizing our world but also introducing new cybersecurity challenges. The rapid pace of innovation necessitates robust regulatory frameworks to protect against these evolving risks. Quantum computing further complicates the landscape, pushing us to develop quantum-resistant encryption. Cybercrime knows no borders, making international cooperation and harmonized cyber laws more critical than ever. Initiatives like the Budapest Convention and the UN's efforts in establishing global norms are pivotal steps forward. Yet, we must enhance collaboration, overcome jurisdictional hurdles, and build capacity, especially in developing regions. As cybersecurity and legal professionals, itâs our duty to engage in these vital discussions and contribute to creating resilient cybersecurity strategies and legal frameworks. By sharing insights and working together, we can navigate this complex landscape and secure our digital future. Letâs join forces, foster innovation, and ensure a safer cyberspace for all. Megha R.
