Finding mentors as a freelancer
- Have you ever had someone help you in your career? Someone who's farther along in the same path, and has guided you? If so, great. If not, now's the time to start. I can't emphasize this enough. Mentors can play a huge role in your professional growth. But getting one can be intimidating. Because of that, I've put together some tips that have helped me find mentors in my own career. First off, you may need to change the way you think. Think about finding a mentor the same way that you think about making a friend. You probably wouldn't say to a stranger, hey, will you be my friend? You build the relationship over time. The same is true for mentors. Next, make a list of people you admire in your field. This is your target list. If you're not sure where to start, I'd say start with someone just a few steps farther along in their career, and another who's at the place you want to end up. Now it's time to reach out in a meaningful way. You'll stand out if you send a thoughtful messageâ¦
