It's easy to think about AI within the context of a CMS. Of using AI to optimize writing, editing, and SEO workflows. The more exciting choice is putting AI in the hands of reporters early on in the process. Over the weekend we published a deep look at how immigration is being portrayed in political ads this election cycle. It's an absorbing read--with editing and reporting from multiple desks across the newsroom. It's also the debut of one of our AI-powered reporting tools: Haystacker. We lead today’s Connecting with the viewpoint of Columbia Journalism Review on the plans announced by the AP to create a new sister organization to fundraise for and support state and local journalism.   Governed by an independent board of directors, the 501(c)3 charitable organization will help AP sustain, augment and grow journalism and services for the industry, as well as help fund other entities that share a commitment to state and local news.   We also deliver more of your stories of working in your first AP bureau – continuing an ongoing theme that’s proven highly popular.   Our colleague Norm Abelson observes: “Of all the compelling, humorous, moving and enlightening pieces I have read on Connecting, the recent stories on first AP assignments rank near the top.   “Often they're as interesting as a novel, as educating as a J-school grad course, as personal as a memoir. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has a dedicated team of "Impact Producers" - it's their job to make sure that the findings we make get to the right people in the right way - policy makers, affected communities, regulators, business groups, prosecutors, whoever it might be. Our reporting is engaged with, not ignored. 👨‍🌾 Last year, we presented to several parliamentary committees. For the first time ever, migrant farm workers gave evidence to the House of Lords, after we reported their stories and facilitated them becoming witnesses. 👩‍🏫 After reading our exposé of Carter-Ruck, the world’s fiercest libel firm, Dan Neidle referred the firm the Solicitors Regulation Authority. 👊 We played an important role (along with tons of others) in the UK's Anti-Slapps coalition - which has already helped bring about a law to make abusive defamation lawsuits easier to dismiss. (A long way to go on that one still) 💸 After four years of uncovering a businessman allegedly scheming millions out of an indebted Essex council, that council is now suing the businessman to get its money back. The governing party was also just voted out. 🍍 We exposed that security guards on Del Monte's pineapple farm in Kenya allegedly killed people over a decade-long people. Kenya's human rights commission is investigating, the company brought in a human rights manager and tasked a new company with improving its security guard corps. 🐄 Nestlé dropped a major Brazilian beef supplier after we exposed how it sourced cattle from illegally deforested land. I'm going to leave it there, because I could go on for a long time. Defending Digital Campaigns Michael Kaiser sheds light on the tactics used by bad actors in election interference, emphasizing their goal could be to sow chaos and apathy rather than influence voting. “They’re trying to divide us at another level,” he said. “For some bad actors, the misinformation and disinformation is not about how you vote. The new rule by Federal State Commission (#FTC) 🇺🇸 bans marketers and content creators from using fake reviews, also those generated with #AI, and other deceptive practices to promote their products and services. The rule prohibits: ▪️Fake or False Consumer Reviews, Consumer Testimonials, and Celebrity Testimonials: it addresses reviews and testimonials that misrepresent that they are by someone who does not exist, such as AI-generated fake reviews, or who did not have actual experience with the business or its products or services, or that misrepresent the experience of the person giving it. ▪️Buying Positive or Negative Reviews: it prohibits businesses from providing compensation or other incentives conditioned on the writing of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, either positive or negative. ▪️Insider Reviews and Consumer Testimonials: It prohibits certain reviews and testimonials written by company insiders that fail to clearly and conspicuously disclose the giver’s material connection to the business ▪️Company-Controlled Review Websites: It prohibits a business from misrepresenting that a website or entity it controls provides independent reviews or opinions about a category of products or services that includes its own products or services. ▪️Review Suppression: The final rule prohibits a business from using unfounded or groundless legal threats, physical threats, intimidation, or certain false public accusations to prevent or remove a negative consumer review. ▪️Misuse of Fake Social Media Indicators:The final rule prohibits anyone from selling or buying fake indicators of social media influence, such as followers or views generated by a bot or hijacked account. The new rule will start being enforced 60 days after it’s published in the official government publication called Federal Register. It’s absolutely a right move but notably overdue. I wrote a piece for Politico on major trends buffeting the media including artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and fighting disinformation in an age of dwindling resources. The conclusion is that founders, CEOs, politicians and others in the public eye now face an exponentially increasing threat of reputational damage. In today’s media landscape, a single negative review can quickly go viral, a poorly phrased statement can trigger a global backlash and an ill-judged joke can wreck careers. While the media world’s pace of change is dizzying, the words written by businessman Warren Buffett almost a decade ago have never been more relevant: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” Article here: https://lnkd.in/dtTNY4PU

Digital News Report, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism flagship annual study, is out this week. Big-picture findings won’t come as a surprise, but it’s still a must-read. For The Fix Media, I picked a subjective list of three interesting insights from the report: 📍Video-first platforms are rising, and traditional media are struggling to compete with individual news creators. YouTube is a key platform for news, and TikTok has overtaken Twitter in news consumption for the first time this year. Unlike on Facebook & Twitter, traditional journalists are lagging behind individual news creators. Interesting examples from the report – Hugo Décrypte in France (who, across all platforms, gets more mentions than Le Monde or BFMTV) and TLDR News in the UK. 📍Paying for news isn’t becoming more widespread – and even existing numbers are skewed by heavy discounts. Last year 17% of people across 20 richer countries paid for online news. This year it’s still exactly 17%. One interesting addition in the 2024 report is the look at how heavy discounting might distort the numbers. “[W]ell over half of those in the US who are paying for digital news report paying less than the median cost of a main subscription ($16), often much less”. In Poland, over three quarters of respondents pay less than full price for their subscription. 📍Elections have had little effect on interest in news so far, but we’ll see full effect in 2025 Interest in news has fallen across much of Europe and other countries. It increased in the US but only slightly. But the surveys for this report were conducted at the beginning of the year. It will be interesting to watch the impact of elections throughout 2024, especially in the United States.
