  • Case Study: dry electrostatic precipitator for particleboard plant emissions control

    Dürr Systems, Inc.

A North American wood products facility needed to reduce emissions from burning wood waste, but plant performance and environmental requirements also needed to be in balance in order to hit production targets. Dürr Megtec specified and installed a new dry electrostatic precipitator (DESP) to treat the process gas from the three wood-fired boilers. The DESP and related systems work as designed and achieved all of the stated environmental and operational goals.

Environmental legislation worldwide are getting each time more stringent, requiring industrial mills and power plants to refer to best available technologies and practices in order to achieve enhanced performance out of existing equipment at their plants.
Cost-conscious end users will also look for efficiency improvements by applying the latest and leading technologies without major capital expenditures, looking for ways to revamp the existing fleet in order to achieve desirable level of particulate matter (PM) emissions in a reliable and cost-effective way, ultimately improving performance of existing electrostatic precipitators (ESP) in their fleet.
This article describes a successful case in which three-phase power supplies (TPPS) were used in conjunction with Automatic Voltage Controllers (AVC) as part of the solution in reducing the ESP PM emissions in cement mills in China.

As performance demands increase for SCR systems, the design of key components becomes more critical. These demands transcend beyond only NOx removal and must be considered for ammonia slip and emission range profiles. The two chief components affected by these designs are the catalyst and its reactor housing, and the ammonia injection system. Since the catalyst is a static design component and its performance is driven by the quality of the exhaust gas being treated,
achieving an adequate ammonia distribution prior to the catalyst is also becoming more demanding.
High performance ammonia systems using efficient IsoSwirl™ mixers offer a means to obtain excellent ammonia distributions while avoiding system tuning requirements to produce a robust SCR system. It can also be a very effective answer to the more stringent environmental legislations worldwide, making IsoSwirl™ an item of choice for challenging SCR performances. Latest SCR designs include optimized catalyst loading facilities and reduced reactor size, which combined with proper catalyst management practices prove to be an effective way to save in costs for both CAPEX and OPEX for the end user.

Gas mixer designs offer a means to obtain high levels of deNOx performance while addressing problematic conditions and featuring simple ammonia delivery systems. Ammonia injection methods may utilize either traditional, vapor-phase techniques or the direct injection of an aqueous ammonia supply which avoids ammonia vaporizer requirements.

The campaign was planned for 4 months and initiated for a short term (3 months), due to the GE and Alstom alliance process,

Considering it was held in the middle of the integration process, we were being proactive and fast in initiating new ideas of product promotion and at the end we were successfully leading the digital online marketing campaign with a good result.

We manage to reached 1.2 ranking on google search (organic and advertising), we successfully achieved awareness on Alstom's AQCS industry solutions (iron & steel, pulp & paper) and managed 13 campaigns on environmental control solutions (ECS) & EPA with 384,600 impressions.

To gain more awareness, we have created the first Alstom Youtube AQCS video campaign Ad and combined it with Google Ad banner - resulting more than 100K views in short period of time. More over, 96% of new users were reached within our AQCS websites.

It was the first experience for both Paulo (as the AQCS product platform manager) and myself (as the AQCS communications manager) to run this projects, working closely with Joelle (as the SEA agency & advisor), and we were all very satisfied with the result.

In 2013, Alstom improved their Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system with the new mixing technology & a highly efficient Ammonia Injection Grid (AIG) able to remove > 95% of NOx from flue gas.
My role as the comms manager for the AQCS business unit was to partner up with my key stakeholder, Paulo Oliveira, who was the AQCS SCR product manager at that time to launch the new product successfully.
The preparation took about half a year, starting from scratch in developing the new name until we were ready to launch it. We managed to filter TOP 20 names received from several AQCS’ employees down to 3 and finally SCR IsoSwirl™ was announced. Iso was taken from Isotropic, means to allege perfect distribution & Swirl to allege the mixing process.
Full comms materials to support marketing strategy in launching the SCR IsoSwirl™ were delivered. We’ve worked with the top selected suppliers in creating print, digital collaterals & application, on time & on budget. BurgerGasser GmBH for print collaterals, Information Media for digital collaterals & Hidden Creative for SCR IsoSwirl™ application page on all platforms (iOS, Android & PC).
An online SCR IsoSwirl™ campaign was also launched both on Alstom’s SCR website page as well on all SocMed accounts. Working together with Marcin Cichy (SocMed manager), we’ve launched “Week of SCR Solutions” and SCR IsoSwirl™ SocMed contest. The SCR IsoSwirl™ campaign & contest was a huge success in Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn.
Finally, SCR IsoSwirl™ product was launched successfully in front of ca. 100 customers during the AQCS Users’ conference in Charlotte, NC, USA (29th & 30th April 2014).
Moreover, shortly after we launched the product, we manage to get the first SCR IsoSwirl™ project worth 17 Million Euros, in Croatia.
