It's been a while since I've had the chance to play around with Articulate Storyline just for fun. Although this project isn't very "wow," I love the colors and design, so I wanted to share. Lately, I've been focusing on ensuring all my interactive projects are accessible. I always include an option for audio narration with custom buttons in the corner, represented by the coffee bean icon. The built-in text-to-speech audio in Storyline is impressive, and it is great that you can customize the pauses using special <tags>. eLearning writing should be like a news article. Get to the point. Support the point. Most eLearning writing ends up being like, "This page is about A. By the end of this page, you will know X, Y, and Z." Get to the point. Support the point as much as necessary. Creatively repeat the point to avoid redundancy.

❤️Grateful to both Sheri Byrne-Haber (disabled) and Meryl. Evans, CPACC (deaf) for teaching about the importance for accurate closed captioning with multi-media (which means reviewing ai generated). Our university uses a video platform 📺that includes an automated cc option (ai). Just as you review an email, paper or audio file before hitting send, also develop a habit to review the captioning! When creating or using multi-media, if you at any point are unable to create or review the captions, let your colleagues/supervisor/network know of your need for support. Your learners/audiences will benefit by these efforts of equitable access for all! 👏🏽

Hoping your first Monday of August is a good one! If you were creating eLearning modules 16 years ago, then you can certainly appreciate how great are all the resources available today. This is a quick intro video I usually add to my courses to welcome learners and sneak in the objectives. Funny thing is that if you nerd out, you would think burned captions are not good but they actually have been noted favorably for dyslexic and second-language learners. For those of you who know me, intentionality in design is something I prioritize above all else. There’s rarely a detail in anything I create that doesn’t serve some specific purpose.  And so, as I worked over the last year to refine the brand and website for The eLearning Designer's Academy, an incredible amount of thought and energy went into the story we wanted to tell and the experience we wanted to create. So, with the launch of our next website last week, I wanted to share a bit about how it all came together...because, trust me, I hardly did it all on my own! And to do that, I created a short video to provide a behind-the-scenes look. In the often guardrail-less world of digital learning production...this quote speaks volumes. Good design isn't just about making things look pretty! It's about making assets that function and serve their intended purpose....if they also look pretty then you've won 🎉 When "design" gets in the way of function, it degrades usability and learner's experience. Here's the kicker! No one ever starts out with the intention of making bad design. Here's some of the main reasons bad design happens in L&D: 👩‍🎨 The creator gets too caught up trying to satisfy their own artistic urges 🚃 TOO BUSY! The creator or reviewer demands every inch of white space is filled, or there's just waaaay too much content jammed in 🐑 Design by committee. A design can start off perfect and end up morphing into anything but that. When it comes to design not all voices are equal! 🥉 Designer or team lack knowledge/capability 📖 Style guides, templates, design systems etc. either don't exist or are ignored 🔍 Reviews don't happen. The best designer can always benefit form fresh eyes I'm sure I've missed other reasons bad design occurs in L&D... Can you help me out with this list. I wish more elearning authoring tools gave coaching tips to instructional designers. On everything from writing assessments to accessibility. Like, “Oh, I see you’ve added a question with “All of the above” as an answer. I suggest you try adding another specific answer versus “All of the above.” Why does this matter? If “All of the above” is an option and learners know two of the options are correct, the answer must be “all of the above”. If they know one is incorrect, the answer must not be “All of the above”. How close do you think AI is to replacing instructional designers? 🤖 🤔 Just stumbled upon this mind-blowing experiment by Dr Philippa Hardman that puts three different setups to the test: 1️⃣ A seasoned instructional designer going solo, no AI 2️⃣ A total beginner, zero ID experience, but with AI assistance 3️⃣ And a pro ID with AI backing them up Here’s the gist: ✅ AI outshines the pros. Across the board, AI-assisted work consistently outperformed human-only efforts — even when the humans were experienced IDs. ✅ AI’s got some unexpected skills, and we’re not just talking automation here! AI showed it can handle tasks we typically think require a human touch, like creating well-structured content and  linking objectives to modules. ✅ The “human touch” is still key. Despite AI's impressive performance, what people valued most was often attributed to human expertise, even when those elements were actually AI-generated. So, no need to fear AI, but don't rely on it entirely either!
