A study of Hannover Principles by Michael Braungart, the reading of the book “Cradle to Cradle”, a manifesto calling for the transformation of human industry through ecologically intelligent design, and a conversation with my community development mentor, George Staggers, the CEO of Central Area Development Association (CADA) have led to this project. Mr. Staggers and I asked ourselves How to provide permanently affordable access to land for such purposes as quality housing to forever removing the land from the speculative market?

How to develop and exercise responsible and ecological practices, which preserve, protect and enhance the land’s natural attributes?

How to create a Non- Profit Organization that could serve as a model in land stewardship and community development by providing information, resources and expertise gathered in U.S to Africa?

A- Why Africa Community Land Trusts Initiative?

    • To provide good quality permanently affordable Eco-housing in Africa both Urban and Rural Cities,
    • To encourage neighborhood stabilization through supported homeownership and community building,
    • To provide opportunity for low-income and moderate income families a chance to benefit from homeownership,
    • To develop a smarter way to invest scare resources,
    • To preserve affordability for future families,
    • To help government’s Economic Development and Revitalization without displacement.

This Project will have the community development as its primary mission and it will develop a range of programs and methods to carry out that mission.

The central activity in this project involves the training of uneducated, semi-literate youths and rural women to build, install, maintain, and repair solar electrification equipment.

Women and youths will learn to build solar electrification systems, including several types of circuits such as a charge controller, an inverter circuit, etc. in six months at the PAtSEG Training Center. After completing the course, the equipment the women build is shipped to their villages where it is used to electrify the houses in their community. Building capacity to maintain and repair the equipment at the local (i.e. village) level is a crucial aspect of sustainability.

“Ubuntu is the philosophy and belief that our humanity is inextricably bound up in one another, and any tear in the fabric of connection must be repaired for us all to be made whole. This inter-connectedness is the very root of who we are.”
