While many people with epilepsy live normal lives with the help of medication and treatment, there is a serious risk called SUDEP which stands for Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy. In this blog post, we explore what SUDEP is, why it happens, who is most at risk, and how people with epilepsy can reduce their chances of it occurring. If your child is having seizures, he/she isn't alone. In fact, nearly 3 million Americans have epilepsy, and about 450,000 of them are kids 17 and under. In West Virginia alone, more than 35,000 people are living with epilepsy - about 8,000 are children and 1/3 of them are medically intractable (medications donât work). WVU Medicine Children's is the place to begin. The goal of the WVU Medicine Childrenâs Epilepsy Program is getting kids to be 100% seizure-free. We provide the most innovative diagnostics as well as the latest surgical and nonsurgical treatments for those with complex pediatric epilepsy all while providing support and guidance for families. During our WVU Medicine Childrenâs and WVRC Media Cares for Kids Radiothon earlier this year Robb Reel from 96.1 KWS issued a challenge. If we broke our fundraising goal he would walk the check from Charleston to Morgantown. Thanks to all of you we raised a grand total of $191,740! 172 miles later, Robb arrived at our hospital safe and sound. Heâs a man of his word and we are so grateful! #wvukids #teamchildrens
