  • There is a new statue in the United Nations north garden at #UN headquarters in New York. The statue is called "Kwibuka Flame of Hope." It is a gift from #Rwanda, and according to UN information, “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝘄𝗶𝗯𝘂𝗸𝗮 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟰 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗛𝘂𝘁𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲, were systematically killed following years of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech exacerbating ethnic tensions.” The inscription reads: "The 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda Remember – Unite – Renew." Note that the inscription refers only to genocide being enacted against Tutsi people. The UN statement quoted above specifically refers as well to “Hutu and others who opposed the genocide.” In Rwanda today, anybody who suggests that victims were other than Tutsis will face severe consequences for ‘denying’ the genocide. Since the US devastated Vietnam with Agent Orange in the 1970s, people around the world have advocated for #ecocide to become a crime equal to genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, the human rights atrocity crimes. Ecocide is defined as “unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts.” 𝗜𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. Advocates for making ecocide a crime under international law say that this would be a powerful deterrent. IAGS also recommends that Armenia bring a case against Azerbaijan at the International Court of Justice for violations of the Genocide Convention. We support these calls to end the violence, for find justice for the victims, and for perpetrators to be held accountable for their crimes.

  • #Genocide Tourism, it’s called – visiting places where terrible things have happened. More than 1,184,000 people visited #Auschwitz in 2022. Why? For some, it is the desire to try to understand the enormity – to grapple with the intentional murder of 6 million Jews, more than 1.1 million who were murdered at Auschwitz. Other tourists appear to be on a thrill-seeking journey, searching for the most lurid, graphic details of human violence and depravity. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁. Today, genocide tourism is flourishing in #Xinjiang Province in western #China, home to #Uyghur people. China is perpetrating genocide on this small ethno-religious group, yet despite years and years of documentation and witness testimony of the horrors, the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) denies any responsibility. To support this denial, the CCP has organized tourist excursions into Xinjiang to show that the Uyghurs are living happy and prosperous lives. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 #UN 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 #Rohingya “𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵.” Seven years ago, nearly a million Rohingya fled from their home country of #Myanmar, formerly Burma, into neighboring #Bangladesh. The country’s army was torturing, raping, and killing them in what is labeled as #genocide. 𝗡𝗼𝘄, 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿. What have the Rohingya done to warrant these atrocities? Simply being who they are: a small Muslim minority in a Buddhist country, isolated, stripped of their citizenship more than 40 years ago, a good target for hate. The UN says that the conditions that enabled the genocide are “lethal doses of international ignorance and indifference and the impunity that it fostered. World leaders have issued statements every year on the anniversary of the beginning of the 2017 genocidal attacks, condemning the violence and expressing sympathy for its victims. These statements, no matter how well intentioned, are grossly inadequate.” 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗶𝗱 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.
