Last week, club leaders from across California gathered at the Troon Irvine office for an inspiring exchange of leadership insights, innovative ideas, and best practices. Corporate leaders from HR, Marketing, Agronomy, Operations, and Legal led dynamic sessions and Q&A discussions. While the content was valuable, the real highlight was the incredible network of first-class club leaders at the club level. A heartfelt thank you to all the GMs and AGMs who made the trip and contributed to such a productive and energizing meetup!

The Club at Eaglebrooke, a semi-private facility in Lakeland, Fla., will undergo a golf course renovation beginning in April 2025. The project is expected to take six months to complete and will focus on the course’s greens, while replacing bridges and bulkheads throughout the property. Mondragon Golf, a Bartow, Fla.-based golf course construction company, will oversee the project. The Club at Eaglebrooke will reopen for member and limited non-member/public play in October 2025. During the project, crews will rebuild all 18 greens to their original size/shape and resurface with Tifeagle Bermuda grass. The two bridges on hole 13 will be rebuilt, and the large bulkhead on hole 17 will be rebuilt. In addition to these projects the agronomy team at the facility will make select drainage, irrigation, tee box, and bunker improvements while the course is closed. “The upcoming renovation will boost our goal of becoming the best semi-private facility in the Lakeland area,” said Ryan Roberts, General Manager at The Club at Eaglebrooke. “When the course reopens next fall, non-member/public play will be more restricted. Therefore, if you are interested in joining The Club at Eaglebrooke, now is the best time – before initiation fees increase.” The Club at Eaglebrooke golf course was originally designed by architect Ron Garl and opened for play in 1996. Next year’s enhancement project will mark the first substantial renovations to Eaglebrooke’s greens since the course opened for play. The 6,917-yard, links-style course features natural lakes, abundant wildlife and has 100 feet of elevation change, which is unique in this part of Florida. In addition to golf, The Club at Eaglebrooke offers a full-service restaurant and banquet facilities that can accommodate up to 200 guests. Learn More at: https://lnkd.in/ghFFfAEH

We are excited to share some associate and club stories with you during Hispanic Heritage month and encourage you to tag us in your posts with creative menu options, club play events and associate stories. Jonathan Soto has come full circle in his golf career. This past April he became director of golf at Bella Verde Golf Course (formerly Montebello Golf Course) in Montebello, CA, the same facility where he played high school golf. It’s the latest stop in a career that actually began when he was recovering from a hand injury he suffered as a youngster while his family was living in León, Mexico. “I ended up losing the first joint of the last three fingers on one hand,” said the 33-yearold, who was born in East Los Angeles and moved back to the U.S. in 2006. “Once I was done with the surgery and rehab, the doctor said I should find a hobby or sport that would encourage finger mobility and help me regain some strength in my hand.” That sport was golf. “I started playing when I was 11 and fell in love with the game,” he said. After graduating from Cal Poly–Pomona in 2014, Soto had difficulty finding a job. But his passion for golf led him to reach out to his former instructor at Alhambra Golf Course, where Soto soon began working as a golf shop attendant. He then immersed himself in the golf industry, rising to assistant general manager at Alhambra before moving on to positions at Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana and Eagle Crest Golf Club in Escondido prior to his return at Bella Verde. Now a PGA Level 3 associate, Soto sees himself in many of the golfers at Bella Verde. “It’s mostly my people,” he said. “About 85 percent of our golfers are Hispanic. I think golf is becoming a little more friendly and a little less intimidating. This is a game that everyone can try. So many people thought golf had that aura of being expensive, or you have to wear fancy clothes. I think those barriers have been fairly broken down by now.” For more about Soto and other great associate stories, visit the link in BIO to our DE&I page. Traveling across the globe during his career, Jaime Faulkner now resides as the Director of Agronomy at The Royal Golf Club Kingdom of Bahrain. "My first experience within the industry was a summer job working at Blenchingly Golf Club in Surrey, England. I never had any real interest in golf or turf beforehand but instantly fell in love with Greenkeeping, driving the machines, hand watering and learning all the many different aspects of the job, it had me instantly hooked." Jamie's experience has taken him from London to Australia, to Ohio State and Florida, to Bangalore, India and then Bahrain where he has been the last two years. "In my daily job, I focus on mentoring my associates by sharing my knowledge and experiences in turf management. I believe in leading by example, so I make it a point to stay up to date with the latest industry trends and best practices." When we asked him to share with us something not many people know (outside the agronomy industry) he told us, "I don’t think many people realize we actually measure the speed the grass grows, and how we can manipulate and improve playing conditions by controlling these measures." Meet Jack Darling, Golf Course Manager Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai, one of our Genuinely Meticulous team members at Troon International. "From a young age I was always on the golf course with my father and Grandfather, religiously trying to improve my game so I could beat them whenever we played. When out on the course, I would always see Greenkeepers doing different tasks and would stand and watch wondering what they were doing – it interested me how they fine-tuned and detailed every aspect of the course. This then resulted in my immediate decision that I determined that there could be no better than when your involved with golf, outdoors in the nature of it all and seeing the impact your role has on a course and being proud everyday of what you have achieved because you can physically see it." We asked Jack what he does to help share the business and career opportunities of agronomy and golf with others. "I think communication is the most important thing to utilize. Explaining and making sure associates understand the reasoning of performing certain tasks and what benefit they will have keeps them informed and feel included in decision making. Another major factor would be social media. Using platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram where people share their golf courses and the practices to tell their story. Seeing what other folks do is intriguing and you can take ideas and thoughts from this to use or test at your own facility. I do, however, believe that inspiration must come from within to make a career within Agronomy. The early starts and long days and constant attention to detail is not for the faint-hearted. You can inspire someone to a certain extent, but you must be driven, determined and have your own inspiration to make this your career." What is one interesting fact about turf/agronomy that not many people know about: "Turf helps purify water entering the ground because the root mass and microbes act as filters and capture and breakdown many pollutants – making it one of nature’s best filters." Meet Jeremy Feister, Superintendent at Magnolia Green Golf Club, Moseley VA. "I started working at Magnolia Green when it opened in 2010 as a 9-hole facility. I began when I was 15, washing carts, and getting rides back and forth to work from my parents and older brother. Throughout high school, I worked year-round, after school and on weekends as a cart attendant. I attended Virginia Tech in 2012 and ended up dropping out after a few weeks in ROTC. Jay and Chad hired me for maintenance and gave me a little more money. I enjoyed it but was not sure I wanted to pursue a career in turf management. I went back to VA Tech in Spring 2012 to work on a degree in Forestry. I got a part time job at Blacksburg Country Club while in school and continued working summers at Magnolia Green. I was part of a 9-hole construction project in 2015, which completed Magnolia Greens 18 holes. I graduated VA Tech in 2016, and Jay (Superintendent) hired me as an Assistant Superintendent immediately upon graduation. I worked as an Assistant for about eight years until Jay accepted a new job in April 2024. I was then promoted to Head Superintendent shortly after. In total, I have been at Magnolia Green for over 14 years and have seen it being built from the ground up, it has been a great experience." When we asked Jeremy about what he does to share the career opportunities in agronomy he said, "I really enjoy talking to the high schoolers who play golf out here or those that just work summers at the club. A lot of them ask what we are doing that day, so I give them a little rundown, so they know a little bit of the agronomy side of things. It reminds me of what I used to be like when I was their age, not really knowing what I wanted to do."
