#InTheNews: The Recovery Legal Care initiative at University of Chicago Medicine has received a $4.92 million NIH grant to study whether providing free civil legal aid to survivors of violent crime can improve recovery and reduce future violence. Launched in 2022, Recovery Legal Care is the first U.S. program to offer bedside legal services to trauma patients. Since its launch, it has already helped 400+ patients access vital public benefits and services like crime victim compensation and record expungement. "Taking this scientific, data-informed approach will help us justify beyond anecdotal stories why we need continued funding and why and how this could be the standard of care for the future of hospital-based violence intervention programs," said Franklin Cosey-Gay, PhD, MPH, director of UChicago Medicineâs Violence Recovery Program, and who also serves as Recovery Legal Care's director of community engagement. This grant will help prove that legal support is a key part of trauma recovery and could set a new standard for hospital-based violence intervention.
