Sooah Lee's work was selected for the 2023 AP Art and Design Digital Exhibit, which features exceptional artwork from AP students' final portfolios. Learn more about Sooah's work: http://spr.ly/6043syS63 From Sooah: "One of the art installation pieces I made for the exam was "White Death," a piece about how carbon dioxide from vehicle emissions contributes to ocean acidification and its negative impact on marine life. I considered the material I used in every piece, mainly reusing or repurposing items that would have been thrown out. Specifically, in this piece, I repurposed old toy cars that my brothers no longer used, which would have piled onto landfills if I had not. I also thought about how my chosen materials could enhance how the viewers see and think about the piece. It was a challenging but fun process of finding the best materials to help convey the meaning and idea that I wanted to share, as the slightest detail could help bring the whole work to another level. In this work, I felt that something was missing. After multiple trials and errors, I added mirrors to multiply the dead coral I made, symbolizing the continuous cycle of marine animals affected by rising CO2 levels from vehicle emissions. The mirrors worked as the unveiling of the culprit for the damaged environment: the viewers. As I had hoped, this last element helped make the piece more interesting and complex." #APArt #APArtandDesign

Shannon Yang's work was selected for the 2023 AP Art and Design Digital Exhibit, which features exceptional artwork from AP students' final portfolios. Learn more about Shannon's work: http://spr.ly/6045StKl3 From Shannon: "The title of this piece is "Breakthrough." When I started to develop isolation into solitude, there were many challenging moments that I had to face. Due to my dadâs job, we had moved between countries since I was little. I was okay with this until I became a teenager when friends and commitment to a specific group are essential. Leaving Korea and moving back to the U.S. required that I give up everything I had built, all my friendships, and the feeling of belonging. This caused me to isolate myself from my surroundings. As a new student from a different country, I could not find a group of friends or quickly form connections, and when the pandemic hit, this became even more extreme. After a year of this uncomfortable forced isolation, my family returned to Korea. At that point, my old friends had moved on and forged closer ties with others; unexpectedly, I still felt stressed and like an outcast who did not belong anywhere. However, it was here that I could form an appreciation for this isolation, a breakthrough, as I began to see it as a peaceful solitude." #APArt #APArtandDesign
