The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA comprises six agencies: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Construction & Development. The MTA network has the nationâs largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. It provides around 2.6 billion trips each year, accounting for about one-third of the nationâs mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers. MTA Bridges and Tunnels, which recorded a record 329 million crossings in 2019, carries more vehicles than any other bridge and tunnel authority in the nation. This morning, we gathered at Grand Central Terminal for our annual Veterans Day Wreath Hanging Ceremony. Itâs a day to recognize the courage and dedication of our veterans at Metro-North and all those who have served. We offer our deepest gratitude to each of you for your service.
Hereâs a throwback from when the New York Transit Museum hosted a nostalgia train ride for Subway Day 2024! ð This vintage Lo-V travelled along portions of the original IRT route, starting at Old South Ferry station, traveling north on the 1/2/3 line towards the Bronx and then down the Lexington Avenue line. It then looped through Old City Hall Station and ended at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station.
More milestones at the 14 St Complex! Two new elevators are now in service at the 1/2/3 station, providing access to the street level and uptown level. This is all part of the larger 14 St ADA renovationâearlier this year, we opened three new elevators and another elevator is expected to open by the end of 2024. In addition to accessibility work, crews created an enlarged mezzanine, made station upgrades, and unveiled a series of six mosaics by Fred Tomaselli (commissioned by MTA Arts & Design).
