About us
Landesa partners with governments and local organizations to ensure that rural women and men living in extreme poverty have secure rights over the land they depend on. Founded as the Rural Development Institute in 1981, Landesa has helped more than 720 million people strengthen legal control over their land in the last five years. When people have secure land rights, they can invest in their land to sustainably increase their harvests and reap the benefitsâimproved nutrition, health, education, resilience, and opportunityâfor generations.

ð£ STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Meet Mardha Tillah, Landesaâs Coordinator of Programs, based in the Jakarta, Indonesia. Mardha began working for Landesa in 2022. ð¬ What is the most rewarding part of your work at Landesa? "The most rewarding part of the work is when the community members and government partners respond to us with enthusiasm. Once, a government official called a brainstorming session with us, in the process to prepare a government regulation on coastal protection and management, an âintellectual healing,â whilst an elder of aâ¯masyarakatâ¯adat/customary community called Landesa a âmessenger from the ancestorâ when we involved him in a meeting to let them know that there are some ways to make their customary land recognised by the government. In line with that, I am enjoying the opportunities to learn a lotâreally a lotâday by day from various experts that are very eager in co-learning in Landesa from backgrounds in environment, forestry, GESI, land, customary law, coastal conservation, and especially legal fields." ðLearn more about Mardha Tillah: https://lnkd.in/gBu-BmvK

ð For International Rural Womens' Day (Oct. 15), Stand4HerLandTanzania along with coalition members Landesa Tanzania, We Effect East Africa, TAWLA TANZANIA WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION, and Tanzania Land Alliance hosted an empowering Rural Women Forum in Nkulabi Village, Dodoma region. â Over 250 grassroots women came together to discuss their challenges around land rights and develop an action plan on how to address those challenges. Key takeaways included: 1ï¸â£ Customary norms still limit women's ability to own land. 2ï¸â£ Patriarchy often restricts land ownership to men, rooted in family lineage. 3ï¸â£ Lack of education on womenâs land rights continues to deny many women their rights. Education is key! 4ï¸â£ Womenâs participation in land decision-making remains lowâencouraging them to step up, especially in the upcoming local elections. 5ï¸â£ Womenâs role in agriculture and food security must be recognized to ensure they benefit from their hard work. ð¬ The discussions were led by grassroots women with the objective of enhancing their voice, agency, and leadership on matters relating to their land rights. ð Letâs keep the momentum going! #Stand4HerLand #WomensLandRights #RuralVoices #LandRights

ð Around the world, womenâespecially those without secure land rightsâare disproportionately impacted by climate change, facing greater risks of food insecurity, displacement, and loss of livelihood. âï¸ But women also hold unique roles and knowledge of natural resources, making them powerful agents of change. Increasing womenâs control over land increases their decision-making power in their households and communities and boosts their influence as champions for climate resilience. ðªThis International Day of Rural Women, weâre spotlighting our programs that address both climate change and womenâs land rights, empowering women to lead the fight for climate resilience in their communities. #LandRights #RuralWomen #WomensLandRights #ClimateAction #ClimateChange

ð¨New Blog Alert - "National Advocacy, Local Resilience: Womenâs Land Rights and Climate Change in South Asia" ð¨ In South Asia, women face disproportionate harm from climate change and land inequities. In our new three-part blog series, Corey Creedon, Landesa's sustainable land use and livelihoods specialist and project technical lead, speaks with national coalition leads about their efforts to empower women and drive climate action at the community level. Hear from: ðâRowshan Moniâ, Deputy Executive Director of Association for Land Reform and Development ðPrem Prakash Nepali, Program Manager of National Land Rights Forum ðMuna Mohamed, Executive Director of Land Sea Maldives ð Read the series and learn how these leaders are scaling gender-equitable land rights and climate advocacy: https://lnkd.in/dzBcGBxX #LandRights #ClimateAction #WomensLandRights #ClimateChange
