We envision a future in which any U.S. student who dreams of studying abroad will be able to participate.

About us

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the US study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs. FEA was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2010 to address the need for an independent study abroad scholarship provider. Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad are given preference, in an effort to make the demographics of US undergraduates studying abroad reflect the rich diversity of the US population. Since 2010, FEA has awarded $1.7 million in scholarships to 425 undergraduates, helping students from all over the United States follow their dreams abroad. FEA relies on the generous support of individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as strategic partners in the field to support these students. The Fund for Education Abroad is an IIE Generation Study Abroad Commitment Partner, pledging $1 Million to increase the number and diversity of undergraduate Americans studying abroad by 2019. After nine years of sustained growth, FEA is poised to invest more deeply in the international education of the next generation, sustainably scaling our efforts so that our scholars may work to increase global understanding, give back to their communities, and mentor future generations of FEA Scholars.

So great to attend my first Fund for Education Abroad gala last night! Big shout out to the Embassy of Denmark for hosting all of us. The ambassador shared a very sweet story of his own exchange experience in Kansas and how he's going back there for Christmas to meet with his host family. It was a very gentle reminder to stay true and connected to those formative experiences from when we were younger. It set the tone for some great speeches from Angela Schaffer and honored guests. Some quick key notes and takeaway messages from those below: ☆ The importance of paying it back through paying it forward. There is beauty in the ripple effect of investing in good deeds and people who will look do that for the next group. ☆ Life is a big group project and we're all just finding our roles, while others may not be as engaged. How we manage personalities and outcomes matter. ☆ Staying true to who we are and navigating our passions really matters. Showing who we are through our interests and expressing ourselves through all of that keeps us connected to those past experiences. Yesterday, I traveled over 500 miles from Newport, Rhode Island to Annapolis (to see my family) and then to to attend this event and I thought that effort was special. But there were so many FEA scholars who who came in from way farther - even from California - to show the meaning and significance of their experiences abroad. So great as always to see many friends and colleagues in the field at organizations who work hard to help support students with these experiences. Over the years, as an FEA volunteer, I've reviewed dozens of scholarships and I've helped do interviews with finalists. This gala helped make the significance and the importance of the work that FEA and everyone puts into education abroad. If I have said it once, then I'll say it again, "study abroad is a team sport." Big shout out to everyone who pitched in and helped set the event up alongside the FEA team members. Big events like that don't happen without many hands pitching in to help create meaningful events like this. #FundForEducationAbroad #FEA #FEAgala #FEAgala2024 #EducationAbroad #StudyAbroad

  • Yesterday was a GREAT day! Thank you to Office of International Programs - Elizabeth City State University for organizing a visit that allowed us to connect with students, staff and faculty members about study abroad. ECSU's approach to ed abroad is one to be adopted--access, inclusion and information are key to getting more students to consider and pursue study abroad. Thank you for allowing us to see your work in action, Andre P. Stevenson and the amazing Study Abroad Ambassadors!

We were excited to have Ms. Angela Schaffer, Executive Director with Fund for Education Abroad and Ms. Priya Sivaraj, Study Abroad Coordinator at University of Sydney visit with us yesterday. They interacted with students in a couple of classes and spent a lot of time interacting with our Study Abroad Ambassadors, sharing information about funding opportunities with FEA, as well as study abroad programs offered at the University of Sydney. It was a lot of fun having them here, especially during our Homecoming Week! Shout-out to several of our Ambassadors for being present, sharing their insights, being open to learning more, and making plans to share information learned from interacting Angie and Priya with their fellow Vikings!! #ECSUAbroad #ECSU #HBCU #internationaleducation #LetsGoGlobal #FEA #USydney Kim V.
