New Zealand’s parliament witnessed a deeply symbolic moment as Māori members performed a haka to disrupt the introduction of a bill aiming to reinterpret the Treaty of Waitangi. Signed in 1840, the Treaty established a partnership between the British Crown and Māori, ensuring protections for Māori rights and self-determination (tino rangatiratanga). Critics argue the proposed bill undermines these commitments, marginalizing Māori voices. The haka symbolized resistance against eroding Māori autonomy, emphasizing the need for inclusive policy-making that respects the Treaty’s original intent. The message is clear: a future for New Zealand that thrives must be built on equity, respect, and the full inclusion of Māori voices in shaping the nation.

When you’re in a space where there’s no one around who looks like you, you can change that. That’s what Rhiane Fatinikun MBE did when she noticed during her outdoor hikes in the North of England, that there weren’t any other Black women around. She created “Black Girls Hike” to create a space for other Black women to get outdoors, feel safe, and share in a sense of belonging. The group has expanded all across the UK welcoming hundreds to get outside and get active together 👏

You’re allowed to choose your path—not settle for it. Adriana Brownlee quit university and decided to climb mountains instead. BIG mountains. And as she ticked off the boxes of some of the world’s tallest mountains, the 23-year-old eventually became the youngest woman to climb the world’s 14 highest peaks. Let this be your reminder: all paths are different. Choose yours. Trust it. And work hard!

The gender health gap is a wide one that exists between women’s health and hundreds of years of unconscious bias that dismiss, misdiagnose, or mistreat symptoms—all because the female body is a big mystery. Women weren’t even required to be included in clinical research until 1993 via the NIH Revitalization Act, meaning that much of modern medicine was developed with research done exclusively on men. In 2015, the NIH implemented a policy requiring that all applicants for NIH grant funding consider both male and female participants in every aspect of their research—from the formulation of research questions to study design, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Researchers must either account for sex as a variable or provide a strong enough reason for why only one sex should be examined. What’s the solution? Prioritizing research to understand women’s bodies in order to treat them. Increased funding can start to close the gap, but currently, only 4% of healthcare research and development funding is reserved for women’s health, and a 2021 study found that a disproportionate amount of resources are granted toward researching diseases that primarily affect men.
