We have some exciting news to share! Amid the complex mix of emotions following last weekâs election, weâre thrilled to share a significant win for education equity from our EdTrust in Massachusetts team! This week, the state legislature passed the landmark Educator Diversity Act (EDA), which will transform how educators of color are recruited and retained across the state. For years, the EdTrust in MA team has been a key force behind EDA--testifying at legislative hearings, speaking with lawmakers, negotiating changes to the bill, and serving as strategic advisors on the EDA Steering Committee. This victory serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful progress is possible, even during uncertain times, and that the pursuit of education equity and justice endures.

Advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in the American education system
About us
EdTrust promotes high academic achievement for all students at all levelsâpre-kindergarten through college. Our goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that consign far too many young peopleâespecially those from low-income families or who are Black, Latino, or American Indianâto lives on the margins of the American mainstream. Although many organizations speak up for the adults employed by schools and colleges, we speak up for students, especially those whose needs and potential are often overlooked. We evaluate every policy, every practice, and every dollar spent through a single lens: what is right for students. We work alongside educators, parents, students, policymakers, and civic and business leaders in communities across the country, providing practical assistance in their efforts to transform schools and colleges into institutions that serve all students well. We analyze local, state, and national data and use what we learn to help build broader understanding of achievement and opportunity gaps and the actions necessary to close them. We participate actively in national and state policy debates, bringing lessons learned from on-the-ground work and from unflinching data analyses to build the case for policies that will help all students and schools reach high levels of achievement. Our Core Beliefs: We believe in the power of education to close the gaps that separate low-income students and students of color from other young Americans. We believe that schools and colleges, appropriately organized, can help virtually all students master the knowledge they need to succeed. We believe long-standing gaps in opportunity, achievement, and attainment have roots inside and outside of schools. And though we know these gaps are stubborn, we also know they are not inevitable. We believe a strong education improves the lives of young people, is vital to sustaining our democracy, and strengthens America.

The 2024 U.S. presidential election results are still fresh, yet Black students across the country are facing a new wave of disturbing racial hostility. Racist messages have swept through colleges and even middle & high schools, telling young African Americans that they were âassignedâ to fictional plantations and warned of forced labor roundups. This disturbing trend is causing confusion and fear among youth and their families. Racist messages and increasing anti-DEI policies are creating unsafe, isolating environments for young people, harming their mental health and eroding their sense of belonging on campuses nationwide. At EdTrust, our commitment is unwavering: we advocate for equity, access, and the fundamental right for every student in this nation â especially students of color â to pursue their ambitions without fear. As we navigate this new climate, protecting students from racial aggression and supporting their mental health must be prioritized. Institutional leaders, educators, and policymakers should urgently reinforce anti-racism policies, provide accessible mental health resources, and create safe spaces on campus where students of color feel seen, heard, and valued. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that students can learn, grow, and pursue their dreams in an environment free from fear and hatred. Together, we must stand against discrimination and invest in building a truly inclusive future. Read the full blog: https://edtru.st/4eycto4

ðToday, the U.S. Department of Agricultureâs Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and the U.S. Department of Educationâs Federal Student Aid (FSA) signed a joint agreement to strengthen access to the #SNAP program for #collegestudents. Research shows that 67% of the 3.3 million potentially eligible students are not receiving SNAP benefits, despite needing assistance. ðThis initiative will raise awareness through outreach emails to students with low-income backgrounds and partnerships with colleges to reach students. The goal is to provide clear guidance on SNAP eligibility and help students overcome barriers to access. ð¡The agreement also includes pilot sharing-data in 10 states, allowing state SNAP agencies and colleges to better reach eligible students. Together, weâre helping ensure students can access the food assistance they need. Read for more info in the press release: https://edtru.st/40JlmI9 #FoodSecurity #HigherEducation #SNAP
