About us
Cushing Terrell was founded in 1938 by architects Ralph Cushing and Everett Terrell. Ralph and Everett acted on the belief that integrating architecture, engineering, and design opened the doors for deepened relationships and enhanced creativity: that belief was the beginning of our design practice and still defines us today. Driven by empathy, our multidisciplinary teams work together to design systems and spaces that help people live their best lives, achieve their visions, and enjoy healthy, sustainable built environments. Each year, we complete projects translating into $1 billion in construction costs. These projects include schools, hospitals and clinics; single- and multi-family residences; and recreational, commercial, retail, and industrial developments. Our services include architecture; mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and environmental engineering; planning; landscape architecture; interior design; and many more. Hailing from 13 offices in seven states, our comprehensive approach and staff of 400+ professionals spanning 30 disciplines and seven markets enable Cushing Terrell to offer clients unrivaled partnerships, service, and value. With our passion to develop imaginative solutions and forever improve, this is where design meets you.

ð Did you know that Cushing Terrell has been designing solar photovoltaic and renewable energy systems for over 25 years? Our expertise includes EV charging systems, micro-grids, small scale solar PV, utility scale solar PV, battery energy storage systems, and other distributed energy systems. We have completed solar photovoltaic projects at all 3 high schools and at 4 of the 6 middle schools for Billings Public Schools and all high schools for Missoula County Public Schools. In Whitefish, our plans are out to bid for the Flathead Electric Cooperative, Inc.'s Community Solar Phase III project (online by 2025) with over 400 solar panels capable of cumulatively generating 200 kilowatts of carbon-free electricity. Co-Op members invest in purchasing up to 5 panels each to further offset their energy bill each year. This project received grants from the USDA's Rural Energy Program for America (REAP) and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). The Cliffhanger House is a stunner overlooking a lake and picturesque valley in northwest Montana. An AIA Montana 2024 Excellence in Design winner, the home's access drive circles from up below, up and around to the front entry, providing glimpses of the vistas afforded by its point of prominence. Cantilevered beyond the steep slope, there is both immersion into the surrounding treetops and a connection to the valley below. New in our portfolio: Step inside the new ImagineIF Libraries branch in Bigfork, Montana, a place where the imagination takes center stage. This 6,000 sq. ft. former church hall was re-envisioned as a place of exploration and discovery for people of all ages. The vision for the project acknowledges that, in many ways, libraries serve as a bridge in their communities â a bridge between people, generations, technology, and learning. A big thank you to our Flathead County Library client for the opportunity to work on this project and to our exceptional project partners, Martel Construction, Inc. and Big Sky Acoustics.
