Atlanta Tech Village reposted this
On December 3, I will have been running the fourth largest technology startup hub in the nation and managing our community of over 1,000 people for six years. As I quickly approach my work anniversary Iâm finding myself reflecting, both on the memories but also on the learnings. Two lessons learned? 1. Creating community is not rocket science 2. Creating community is not easy Since community can be a pretty abstract concept, I want to share a learning and a framework when thinking about creating it. Community has three stages and three components. 1. Congregation 2. Commonality 3. Connection 1. Congregation = Crowds Crowds are transient, temporary, unstructured, and oftentimes disorganized. They are often formed spontaneously and exist for no specific purpose. They gather for a moment and disband shortly after. 1. Congregation + 2. Commonality = Fans/Followers In my humble opinion, most people trying to create community stop and camp here. Fans or followers are groups of people with something in common and a passion or interest in that thing. When the group gathers it can look like a concert, sporting event, convention or conference. Some people would argue that the Swiftie movement through cities or diehard fans attending football games are communities. In my opinion, theyâre not and canât be because they lack the last componentâ¦. True connection. 1. Congregation + 2. Commonality + 3. Connection = Community When a group of people are pulled together with a similar interest, passion, value, goal, or even problem AND they are given the tools, encouragement, and the space to connect and KEEP CONNECTING you have the potential to create incredible community. Iâm so grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to be a part of the Atlanta Tech Village community this long and the great responsibility of stewarding it through very high highs and some pretty impactful lows (Thanks, COVID). But weâve got eyes on a very bright future as we double from one location to two in January 2025! If youâve made it this far in this post and weâve crossed paths in the last six years in or because of ATVâs community, would you leave a comment or I like? :)
