A new AAP policy co-authored by Scott Hadland recommends that pediatricians should always provide naloxone to patients when prescribing opioids for acute pain management. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose and is safe to give to someone, even if theyâre not having an overdose. Pediatricians should also counsel patients and families on the signs of an opioid overdose and how to respond to one when prescribing opioids. Learn more in AAP News: https://lnkd.in/e6ubCUiZ

The FDA is proposing to remove oral phenylephrine (PE) as an active ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) products after an extensive review found it is not effective as a nasal decongestant. While the drug was approved in 1976, numerous studies showed no significant difference between PE treatments and placebos. Some nasal decongestant products contain oral PE and another active ingredient such as acetaminophen or dextromethorphan. The presence of PE in these medicines does not affect how other active ingredients work, and consumers can continue to use those products. A final order from the FDA will come next year.
