Today in Transportation History, 2022: The Opening of a Light Rail Station in San Francisco’s South of Market Neighborhood. Yerba Buena/Moscone station in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood was officially opened. This underground light rail station, which is a link in the T Third Street line of the San Francisco Municipal Railway’s Muni Metro system, owes its name to both Yerba Buena/Moscone Gardens and Moscone Convention Center in that section of the city. Yerba Buena/Moscone station – specifically located at 4th and Folsom Streets –was one of the stations built as an extension of the T Third Street line between San Francisco’s Chinatown neighborhood and SoMa. Today in Transportation History, 1949: A U.S. Air Force Plane Completes a Record-Setting Flight Across the Atlantic. A new aviation record was established when a U.S. Air Force (USAF) C-74 Globemaster plane transporting 103 people landed at the Royal Air Force (RAF) station near the village of Marham, England. This 82-ton (74.4-metric ton) plane, which was known as the Champ and reached its destination approximately 23 hours after flying out of Mobile, Alabama (with a four-hour stopover in Newfoundland), became the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean while carrying more than 100 people. National Native American Heritage Month: David Moses Bridges, Passamaquoddy Canoe Maker. David Moses Bridges was a member of the federally recognized Passamaquoddy Tribe on the Passamaquoddy Pleasant Point Reservation in the eastern part of Maine. The Passamaquoddy people constitute one of the Eastern Algonquian nations that form the Wabanaki Confederacy, which encompasses various tribes within both the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.
