Include the problem you're solving, user need, or user story in a common format in the design spec / file and refer to it in design reviews so the devs know where to look for that context. If the changes you're being asked to consider impact user experience be ready to tell a real, emotional human story about how that might feel. Finally, be honest about what is likely to matter for the UX and what isn't. Be willing to give ground on changes that don't have a significant impact but do save dev effort. Devs need to know you're not just wanting to get your way but are holding the line on what will keep the product good. This means they are more likely to trust your judgement in the future and need less convincing.

I always focus on the core needs of users. I ensure that any changes align with the overall design goals and don't compromise ease of use or accessibility. I collaborate with the developers to find solutions that balance technical constraints with a user-first approach.

One thing I’ve found helpful during my conversations with the developers is to always ask them probing questions on such differences. Once the core issue is identified - then I use a decision matrix to identify the impact of the trade off. This helps me to be objective whilst upholding the UX and the developers’ POV without sounding arrogant or adamant.

Flexibility is essential. If certain design elements are tricky, I’ll prioritize which ones we can’t compromise on and which ones are more flexible. For example, visual details like micro-interactions might be adjusted, as long as the core functionality and user flow remain intuitive and smooth.

Balancing design and technical constraints means finding a middle ground. Sometimes, perfect designs aren’t feasible due to technical limits. Focus on what impacts usability most and be willing to adjust or drop less critical features if they pose major technical challenges.

Unfortunately part of our role as designers is learning what hills not to die on. Depending on the industry we are serving, limitations can challenge our "perfect" solutions from many directions. While technical feasibility is one hurdle, things like legal requirements, connections to legacy systems, or availability of proper resources can all present limits. The uncomfortable truth as that some of these limitations will unavoidably impact usability. The fun part of our job is inventing (and validating with users) creative ways to get around these challenges and optimize the user experience.

One thing I will always advocate for is taking your team of engineers along on the journey of design. You have user experience in mind; they do as well but in addition to functionality and whether or not designs can be properly executed. So trying as much as possible to keep them in the loop while you design, putting into consideration both theirs and the users concerns and making needed changes as you communicate openly will do a lot more good for the overall design process than doing it all alone in a bit to serve the users.

How we brought a culture of Feedback Loops to my org: 1. Collaborate early and set up frequent check-ins. 2. Using interactive prototypes to clarify expectations. For the iterative Process: 1. Hand off designs in phases for early feedback. 2. Continuously refine based on the UAT sessions and bug smash. 3. Holding post-mortems to learn from every release and improve collaboration.

We've found success in holding 'design-dev pairing sessions'. Designers and developers work side-by-side, discussing mockups in real-time. This collaborative approach helps identify technical constraints early and find creative solutions that maintain UX integrity. Recently, it led to an innovative compromise on our checkout flow, improving both performance and usability. These sessions have significantly reduced design revisions and fostered mutual respect between our teams.
