I presently work with a Production Team which put up a couple of theater productions for Broadway, Off Broadway and London, England. An important component is to have your vision in mind and the outcome on paper. What exactly are you shooting for and how are you going to meet your goals. Have a team which you can rely on to share and collaborate about your vision. Team work makes the dream work.

For me, putting on a large Magic production, having a team who are experts in the areas I'm weak in is a must. One that I can ask questions and are willing to help me achieve my goals and vision.

Many times it's been been said by those I worked with that I'm a highly creative communicator. There is immense value when visionary team members come equipped with the ability to envision the overall effect desired, and to communicate and instill that vision in others; there are those who are able to successfully convey the mood and emotion the writers and directors intended. This requires highly creative enthusiasm in communication. This is a skill set that somewhat defies the left brain logic of algorithmic pattern seeking.

Consider health and safety as one of the key skills. Technical teams often work long hours and have the safety of cast and crew at their finger tips. Consider automation, one incorrect move could have devastating effects.

Here is where that team communication comes in. For me as an magician, I need to know how a prop works, talking witn the builder, then having someone who is good in lighting, to help you highlight the prop, or hide something in the shadows, and someone who is good with sound/music to highlight the routine, and putting it all together. Then I would have my que sheets made up, if I was doing a tour and had to rely on the venues technical personal.

This is a no brainer. You are in the show business, you got to have those people skills in place or else there are thousands of other contestants to take your spot. You will need to make 50+ people believe in your vision, you will need to make sure that there is no misunderstanding in the group by clearly communicating the expectations, you will need to listen to the occasional banters and tantrums as well. For navigating all that you will need to be your best version. All in all if you enjoy being in a collaborative space where each new minute brings a new challenge towards you then this is your place to be.

yes building good relationships. I have always given just dues to all the techs involved in my production. I try to never have an ego that would push a tech person the wrong way, as this is there job and you need to work with them. I have always said and tell everyone in my productions, be kind to the techs as they can make you look Great or Bad. You do need people skills.

Yes but remember to use your experience and skills but also be open to listening to your teams around you. If you don’t know the answer someone will, the industry is full of talented people all around you.

Como en la vida...siempre nos enfrentamos a situaciones que nos desestabilizan, y nos obligan a repensar,a reactivar la creatividad...se llaman soluciones. Y en ellas debemos enfocarnos y así hallar la salida...en el teatro la impronta,la calma y el buen humor pueden ser buena guía...

A mentor of mine, my first mentor in entertainment production, used to say to me, "We work in an industry called 'show business.' Never forget the business."

I just read what Casey Martin wrote and I must have had the same mentor, because he would tell me, you need to understand Show business, and as a magician you have to have a show and you better know the business to make it.

You have to keep up with the times and learning the new ways of creating your stories, but don't forget some of the old school ways of doing things. there is a saying in Magic, what is old to some will look new to others
