What helped me when I left GSA Network (after 14 years) was putting together the list of accomplishments that I or we as a co-leadership team achieved. Because my area of work had been so niche (working with LGBTQ2S+ youth organizing and advocacy) I was afraid I wouldn't have much to offer the wider field. Putting together my list of accomplishments it became clearer that while I did things like successful coalition building on behalf of GSA Network, it wasn't until I wrote it down, that I realized that I was actually very skilled at coalition building and that was a transferrable skill. This exercise not only reassured me of my capabilities but also instilled confidence in my ability to contribute effectively beyond my previous role.

First explain the change-Impacts, benefits to the organization managers and to the valued employees. Second ask employees for their inputs and concerns. Analyse the organization needs of change and Employees concerns to take their fear off. Make consensual decision that offers a sense of ownership to all workers.

Start by assessing your skills and strengths as a nonprofit leader. Identify transferable skills that are relevant to your new career path. Consider skills such as leadership, project management, fundraising, and community engagement. Understanding your unique strengths will help you target the right opportunities and communicate your value effectively.

Update your personal branding to reflect your career change and highlight your relevant experience and skills. This includes updating your resume, LinkedIn profile, and any other professional profiles or platforms. Tailor your messaging to showcase how your experience in the nonprofit sector translates to your new career goals. Use keywords and phrases that are relevant to your target industry to increase your visibility and attract the attention of potential contacts and employers.

One of my best pieces of advice is to craft a clear, detailed but brief email to select circle of mentors, peers, and well-connected contexts—BCC them all—and let them know you’re looking for the next great adventure. Give some context, express the kinds of roles you do and don’t want to explore, send a copy of your most updated resume, and ask for virtual and in-person coffee chats, advice, connections, and referrals. Not everyone will reply, but those who do will often be wildly helpful, because often it really is who you know and not *just* skills and experience that make all the difference in the professional world. Leverage your network wisely and with intent and direction, always.

Tap into your existing network of contacts within the nonprofit sector and beyond. Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, and professional connections to let them know about your career change and ask for their support and advice. Attend networking events, industry conferences, and workshops to expand your network and connect with professionals in your target industry. Be proactive in reaching out to new contacts and building relationships, and don't be afraid to ask for informational interviews or introductions to key decision-makers.
