Honestly, it shouldn’t be the first step in Post Merger Integration, it should be step 0. The Vision and Strategy should be created way before we start the integration. It should be part of the transaction phase, it should be ready before signing the deal! How can you sign the deal or even consider the deal without having the reason behind doing a deal in mind? At least you need to know the WHY! WHY do you do the deal, how is it going to change the situation of the business? How does the world look like in a couple of years once the transaction is closed and the target is integrated, and you’ve realized all the objectives? Voila – you have your WHY, the vision and strategy defined. It shouldn’t change between signing and closing.

First of all, Post Merger Integration or Acquisition Integration is a major transformation project. Having that in mind the key to success is leadership throughout the entire two(!) organizations. Communication is King! One of my favorite openers for Post Merger Integration Teasers is the story of Martin. Martin is the CEO of an private equity owned engineering company which just acquired a software development company. They are in sight of Closing and Day 1. The “only” critical step is the carve-out of the target requiring an employee transition. And guess what, due to poor communication so far, employees refrain to agree to this transfer. So the carved-out organization will not come with the intended “assets”; highly qualified people supporting the new business strategy of the acquirer. These 750 characters are a bit too few to hold the entire story. But: Integration Communication starts long before Day 1!

Post Merger Integration – or Acquisition Integration as you call it here – is way more than a sprint. It is even much longer than a marathon. Better to consider it an ultra race. After the famous 100 days there should be “key” things established. But these are rather the first steps, quick wins and signs of success than the full integration realized. What does it take to fully realize the integration? A good question; it always depends on the situation and there is no one size fits all. Sometimes it takes 2 years, sometimes you are a bit faster. A colleague of ours once described the ultimate goal of the integration this way: When the rumbles in the system are no longer justified by the differences between the two organizations!
