One tip here is that the heavier your camera rig is the steadier the shot is going to be. Not to say you can’t get very stable shots from dslrs especially ones with image stabilization built in. However if your working with a cinema camera such as a red, bmpcc, or fx7, and your planning on shooting handheld adding a v-mount, mattebox, etc. will go a long way to keeping your footage steady.

To me, using a stabilizer is a must. Watching shaky video screams low quality. Worst case scenario, hold the camera close to the chest to stabilize or put it on a sturdy surface.

Using gimbals and steadicams is a great solution to improve image stability in many cases, but a good DOP always needs to remember that idea come first. Certain scenes require to be shot literally handheld as gimbal moves might be too smooth whereas a good handheld technique (not talking here about shaky mess, but professional handheld shot) would add that exact artistic touch of a slightly "breething" picture to the scene. One more thing to remember is that any gimbal or steadicam would not make a perfect shot by itself and a cameraman would still need some experience in using that sort of gear

Stand with feet at shoulder with, arms tightly close to your chest. If the lens/camera offers stabilization keep it on. If you can manage a gimbal, it will certainly improve towards more stable and fluid takes. But if there is not, just leaning the camera on a firm surface like a table, chair or even a light post will help

One thing I’ve found helpful to say is to always go training before the footage. In this case the repetition leads to the best results. Not just to use the camera features to reduce movements or avoid motion blur but also to have the best movements of your entire body to reduce even more the potentially damaging effect of the footage. There’s absolutely no softwares who can fix a bad-taken footage.

"Know your gear" - is a #1 rule for a filmmaker. Some cameras have good IS, some don't, lenses also may have it or not. Sometimes we need it on, sometimes off. It's not always about Minimal but Native ISO which is also different for different cameras. Same setting may give different results with different cameras. Global/rolling shutter, gyro-sensor, weight, etc. - all these things need to be learnt, checked and set up long before the footage. And there's no such a thing as perfect settings for any camera. So know your exact gear perfectly and it will pay back with the best footage it can produce!

Holding the camera correctly and being comfortable with it are huge when it comes to getting the perfect shot especially when filming in motion. One of the techniques I learned was to tuck in my elbows and bring the camera as close to me as I could to try and create a sort of steady cam. Practicing before filming can help save time on set and produce better results and working on your balance and fluidity of motion is key.

The more contact points you have while holding your camera, the more stable your shot will be. This means holding your camera firmly with both hands and even stabilizing it further with your body if need be

I think the training before the footage is key. You need to repeat the same process several times until you have the acceptable results that can be fixed by software. There’s a lot of ways to absorb shocks or bumps but for each scene you may need a different approach to use your hands and get the best result. I think the techniques said here and the training combined are the best way to get the best result.

Above all the concepts, I also advice profoundly the art of practicing alot in the field, walking with a camera and breathing intervals, shoulder movement. All these combinations will come in handy to getting nice shots

In the situation without tripod, I always keep my elbows close to my body when the shutter speed below 60 before I taking a shot. Believe this simple thing as the article said then you will know the difference. This effective technique save my life many times.

We should distinguish one movement as different than others: walking with your camera. While there are other ways to move your camera, walking (more than a couple steps) really demands some sort of stabilization, either in-camera, external, or both.

I’m a big believer that it order to get smooth looking footage, it is import to keep the motion consistent. I always make sure to keep my handheld footage consistent, that way your eyes will know what to expect. An example of this would be to pan to the left for every shot.

Practice, practice and even more practice - that's what gives a smooth professional footage. Amateurs often think that shooting handheld is about hands and eyes only. But cameraman uses all the body to get those smooth moves - legs, back, shoulders, arms. Every part of the body should work in coordination with eyes and thoughts. Human body is the most advanced gimbal ever existed in cinematography. But it requires a lot of practice, sometimes not only with cameras, but also in a gym.

Push your elbow into your stomach for more stabilisation. This way you have one less moving angle to work with in the post production.

In the past I have mounted my camera on a tripod and used my body as a counterweight to help create a smooth ramp or pan. There are different techniques as well as adding weight to your tripod itself to help give you a makeshift stabilizer.

Tripod is probably the easyest way to keep your camera stable. But idea comes first! Never forget that. Monopods and tripods a great, gimbals are awesome, professionally shot handheld footage is fantastic. But they all add different "touch", different feelings to the scene. And the only correct way to choose one technique over another is to know what every scene is about, whether it should look dramatic or strictly official, add tension or reduce it, etc. Knowing that, we then choose a stable tripod shot with a perfect horizon line or a handheld shot with a Dutch angle. Tripod and monopods are perfect for certain purposes, but not for everything

Using a tripod or monopod has always helped me in getting that shot that I want. Holding a phone or camera for extended periods of time is not the way to go. Use the tools available to you

All of that softwares are great to fix any imperfections in the footage. However I think that you need a footage with the minimum acceptable quality and accuracy to use the editor to make it look perfect. There’s absolutely no softwares who can do miracles, fixing something that is completely ruined. Training before and get the best result to edit your video and make it look awesome! The camera needs to be an extension of your body at that point. It’s totally necessary to point out that you are in charge of the camera and you make the thing good or bad.

Neste tópico, cuidado. Os programas citados não são específicos para fotos, e sim para filmagens. Photoshop, Gimp, e afins seriam mais indicados. Outro ponto/ não há programa que corrija um take muito, muito ruim. Caso contrário, você estará criando uma imagem que não existe. Never rely on post-production in advance! Nothing is perfect and none of you footages will ever be. There will always be some imperfections that you'd miss while shooting. That is where software comes in handy. But if anything can be fixed before or during actual shooting - it should be fixed! Even when it requires extra hours spent on pre-production and production. Otherwise all the "easy to fix in post" failures you know about will sum up with the ones you won't have noticed while shooting and the mixture of those may lead to some really really painful results in post

Having the right tools to stabilize your camera is obviously immensely helpful, but two principles have helped me in the absence of said equipment: tucking your elbows (holding your elbows tight to your body and tucking them into your sides) and three-point contact with your recording device.

In my experience, Use Image Stabilization (IS). If your camera or lens has image stabilization, activate it. IS compensates for small shakes and vibrations, particularly helpful in handheld shooting. Another option is to Lean Against a Solid Surface: If available, lean against a wall or a stable object for additional support. Shoot in Burst Mode: If your camera has a burst or continuous shooting mode, use it. You may get a sharper image in one of the frames. Invest in a Monopod or Gimbal: For extended handheld shooting, consider using a monopod or a gimbal. These accessories provide additional stabilization.

When you embrace handheld camera movement in video shooting, it's like finding the groove in an improvised dance. There's an art to envisioning shots on the fly, capturing moments with a raw, genuine vibe. It takes practice to balance spontaneity and control, but it adds an authentic touch to your storytelling, making the filmmaking journey engaging and personal.

If we are talking interviews and stiff -no movement shots, Tripods are best. But if it is more of creative ,dramatic and cinematic moves you are going to have to work with a gimbal stabalizer and Stabalizer effects on the preferred editing softwares.

I think having a strong core [in your body] is a real key. Stabilizers are very helpful but I had a shot one day where I chased a principal around a school on opening day and it was all hand held with out assistance. It went very well, but with out having the strength hold the camera steady, it wouldn't have worked. I was shooting a SONY EX3, not a small light camera compared to some, but with a wide angle lens very hand holdable. It was a 90 degress day with 100% humidity and aafter the shoot my forarms and palm of my hands cramped incredibly and it was painful... but the footage was great under the circumstances. That was 10 years ago... I'm pretty sure I couldn't do that today if I had to under those conditions.

Use the softwares, the tools and techniques but don’t be lazy and go training before start filming. The camera is an extension of your body and your skills will be extremely important to your video.

I think that everything above is really helpful just put together. There’s no simple magic bullet for stable footage especially if you don’t have a physical accessory that you can use such as a tripod or gimbal. But if you use techniques like having three points of contact with your camera and stabilizing in post together, you’ll end up with a more stable video. One thing to consider might be to zoom out a little bit for more stable footage.
