I have found myself in these types of situations and I’m always open and frank in saying that I’m not great at IT and technical stuff. Lost cost how many interviewees have actually helped solved the problem by directing me what to do. I then look at their CV and make a comment that they have clearly demonstrated their IT skills. Also a good way of calming the nerves of the interviewee. Times like these often make for good ice breakers when trying to solve an IT/technical issue.

Preparation is Key: Before delving into the interview, itself, it's essential to prepare your virtual environment. Test your internet connection, camera, microphone, and any software or platforms you'll be using well in advance. This proactive approach can help you identify potential issues early on, giving you time to troubleshoot and resolve them before the interview begins.

This is something we preach to candidates as part of interview prep so it’s crucial that we practice what we preach in terms of checking all is well and working before the start of an interview.

It's always important to send meeting details a minimum of 24 hours before the interview to allow all necessary parties to ensure Apps are downloaded and time is properly allocated. I always request candidates to jump on earlier so we can ensure speaker is working, network connection is good, noise disruptions are limited, background is clear and camera is working efficiently. This gives us enough time to resolve all before the panel join the meeting. Once again always keep in mind how unpredictable technology is so if there are issues, communicate with the panel and candidate calmly and effectively and set clear expectations.

Be Human About it. It is so important to put yourself in the candidate's shoes, and ensure they are consistently reassured that such technical issues are out of their control and you just want to help them. If the panel is facing issues be their spokes person reassuring the candidate this is a glitch and manage expectations. Provide solutions where you can such as: -Let's switch off videos to assist with WIFI connection -Let's drop off and re-join and see if it's resolved -Suggest a Change of location etc Resolving issues timeously helps all move forward, demonstrates problem solving skills and keeps emotions and frustrations at bay.
