Being honest and sticking to the facts as you know it helps. Although you might be tempted to misrepresent the facts, don't. Admit you are wrong when you are wrong and ask for leniency. The disciplinary panel is made up of human beings.

But, if the situation is serious, suggest the student seek legal advice. Many universities have agreements with legal aid organizations, or the student might need to hire a lawyer. It's okay: explain it and we'll move on. Instead, I often see students try to defend something and make it worse, claiming things like "everyone else did it, so I did too, but you didn't catch them." To prepare for an academic hearing, take your time and think about what happened, why the university might find it problematic, and tell us your now enlightened perspective and future plans.

Help the student prepare for any meetings or hearings by organizing their thoughts and gathering relevant evidence or documentation. Practicing how to present their case can be beneficial. Ensure the student is aware of the university’s policies and procedures regarding disciplinary actions. This information is usually available in the student handbook or on the university’s website.
