When creativity is stifled, resetting the team dynamic is key. Hereâs how:
1. Encourage open input: Highlight the value of all perspectives.
2. Rotate leadership: Let others lead discussions to share their ideas.
3. Create safe spaces: Ensure quieter voices are heard.
4. Acknowledge contributions: Build confidence by recognizing every effort.
This boosts both creativity and team collaboration.

As an executive, I often tackle the complexities of team dynamics. I believe in addressing creativity blocks with a blend of diplomacy and firmness. I start with a one-on-one chat to grasp their perspective and express my concerns about our shared creativity. I cite specific examples of unhelpful behaviours and delve into their root causes. Setting clear expectations for collaboration and valuing every idea helps foster an inclusive environment. I encourage open communication and brainstorming, where all can contribute, particularly the concerned team members. Assigning roles that play to each person's strengths and recognizing diverse contributions empowers our team, builds confidence, and promotes ownership.

Leadership researcher Chris Musselwhite describes three work styles: originators, pragmatists, and conservers. Pragmatists appear to limit the ideas of originators, and conservers can list dozens of the reasons an idea will fail. When you ask pragmatists and conservers what they are attempting to achieve, the pragmatist says they are trying to make the idea work, and the conserver tells you they are protecting the firm. Explain to the originators that the pragmatist is their closest partner as they are attempting to help their idea succeed and tell the conservers they would be most helpful if they focused on challenges to the ideaâs success. People who appear to stifle creativity may be attempting to do the right thing as they know it.
