Tripods are great for producing a steady shot. But for me, I like the freedom of handheld. If i want my hand-held camera work to be steady, I use my body as a tripod. Giving myself a slightly wider stance, and forcing my elbows tightly into my waist, holding my breath as i take the shot. Or i lean onto a wall or something. For me it works and it also means i don't have to carry a tripod:-)

A tripod can be effective when you’re shooting still shorts and movable shorts with mounted extension cable systems. A Tripod can only reduce single axis be it vertical or horizontal or whatever the camera is mounted.

Make sure you use a quality tripod. There are many cheap ones with a loose head that will wiggle a bit. This defeats the purpose.

I take pictures and video while riding motorcycles, hence, tripods are cumbersome while doing so! I find, while taking pictures or video of moving objects ON a moving object, having one steady hold on anything 'reliable' like handlebars, a shoulder, an elbow against ribcage, guarantees a balanced, steady result.

In addition to Tripod, we can use more advanced technology like stabilisers which include post production software stabilisation aswelll and camera mounted 3 axis gimbals. The use gimbal can provide more stable shots in most ridiculous situations on the sets or more harsh locations. Camera gimbals come in two basic varieties: two-axis and three-axis. The three-axis gimbal offers more stability when compared to the two-axis type.

As the technology advances we can use more intelligent devices like Sensor Shifting Capabilities in built in the cameras. This can help in shooting the moments instantly when the other tech is not available at the moment.

The shutter speed is essentially part of a camera or I can say the whole cinematic universe. Shutter speed allows you to shoot the desired shot with the natural effects instantly which of that can be also done in post production. Time is essential part to be considered while shooting. A well planned cinematographer does analysis on the set and discusses the shot with the director and accordingly sets up the camera setting mostly like Shutter Speed, ISO, White Balance and Exposure Values to achieve the desired shot.

Some of the shots can be taken twice, thrice or even multiple times. But some shots are meant to be shot perfect with the single timings (example: Car, Bike, Aeroplane stunts or natural timings like Golden Hours or shots in the Rain Thunder etc) require the camera person who is knowing the right values of the camera settings and the tools for the shot. Using the right technique will improve accuracy and utilise the time efficiently and achieve the desired shot more accurately. Or the situation can be like this you’ve to use the camera in the situation where the cinematographer itself is moving or doing the stunt. The management should put the right people with the right mindset and the technique to achieve the goal.

All of this is fantastic advice, but don’t forget to consider the context of the shot itself. Not all clips require buttery smooth action. Good examples can be found in an action or horror film, where camera shake is commonly used as a creative or contextual outlet. This is all within reason of course, you still need to see what’s going on in the shot.

A slider also prevents camera shake and it provides smooth camera movement for videos. A good one costs a few hundred dollars but can elevate your productions to a new level.
