Every superhero has an origin story. From Batman to Wonder Woman, each had a catalyst that crystalized their purpose and called them to action. Becoming an Agent of Change requires a similar clarity of mission, born of challenge. Agents of Change see a better way, and inspire others to join their quest. They create possibilities and harness energy to maintain momentum. Purpose is the why that fuels the who, what, and how. When confidence falters, changemakers can ground themselves in their origin stories and refocus on their goals. When progress seems daunting, group energy can find creative ways to carry the mission through.

I think being of great impact is not setting out to be famous or overly popular . Seek no credit. Have a history of giving and generously leaning in. Be someone impressive by the least likely people. Stick to what you know. Dive deep into your area of genius. Spend time being curious and insanely passionate. Collaborate with others that match your energy and see what comes from it. Little by little, you look around and you are being sought out not by people wanting something from you but asking how they can help you. Be a part of what you are doing. Surprise people. Do things they don't expect. Places they didn't expect. Again, not for fame, but to show you walk the walk. Givers Gain. No has been able to prove me wrong yet.

In my 7 years in the social sector, I've faced doubts about our impact. But I've learned that inspiring active, responsible changemakers is possible. I've found that defining one's purpose often comes from deep reflection of life experiences. Innovation in the simplest form is often the answer. It’s a solution that is not rocket science, but a new way of approaching a problem. We have done that with waste management. Applying skills is a dynamic process. It's about not only employing your abilities to initiate change but also motivating and engaging others to join in. By setting an example and showcasing the positive results of your application, I manage to inspire others to participate and challenge the status quo. People want to connect with the person behind the professional façade. When we are authentic, genuine, and real, we attract people's attention and interest. By embracing our true selves, including our imperfections, we build trust and create deep connections with others. Often times we can be blind to the awesome things in our lives because we live them everyday. But, when we share our stories — and I mean actually share the real stuff and not a curated feed for social media — others will likely see a bit of themselves and realize that they have something to offer as well. So, while I don’t love the word “inspire” (it’s overused IMO), sharing makes it easier for others to do the same. And that’s how we learn from each other. From that shared learning and appreciation comes change.

To create the change you need to be the change and lead from the front.
