Free Internet access is only part of the story, because something more is at work here. It will surprise many to know that much of most reliable and worthwhile human knowledge available on the internet is behind a pay wall. As an example of this, university libraries give students access to relevant, timely research, data, and publications. Access to these materials is both costly (tuition & fees) and limited to the time they are enrolled as a student. Fortunately, a well funded public library can do what the universities and search engines are not equipped for - purchase public access to this content by paying for quality, timely information so the general public can be as well-informed as it wishes to be.

In a society of lifelong learning public libraries will be nodes connecting the local learning setting – whether it is of a formal or informal kind – with the global resources of information and knowledge, public libraries can therefore play a role of fundamental importance in the development of future systems.

Truly, libraries have always been about providing staff expertise to help navigate the broad and deep ocean of information and entertainment available to a person - and that's needed now, more than ever. The ocean is larger and deeper; the storms have increased in intensity. A guiding thought for today's library professionals should be "what more do I offer than a simple Google search?" We offer a far better perspective than the top 5 google hits or the AI that increasingly appears at the top of the page pretending to curate information.

Lifelong learning and information acquisition do not have to happen within the framework of an educational course. They also occur as individuals, regardless of their educational background, learn new information, acquire new skills, or strengthen their abilities. Whether it's an undergraduate seeking scholarly resources or an avid gardener seeking advice for growing plants, the library and its talented staff maintain the resources and skillsets to offer guidance and helpful content. Librarians have the skills to guide curious information seekers and learners of all ages and abilities through the process of gaining knowledge and empowering themselves.

Lifelong Learning happens when opportunities to learn are freely and flexibly available. Libraries have the most sophisticated interfaces in the shape of human beings with the skills knowledge and attitude to welcome and serve all. They train and coach users on information literacy in bite size answer a specific question or long form teaching sessions. The impetus to engage with this comes from the user and is often started by an attempt to solve a real life problem. This is a strong motivation. The library enables them to solve problems. Literature provokes thought in the reader and even those who solely seek entertainment or solace learn philosophy, culture, sociology, history, culinary skill by reading for pleasure.

I’ve noticed that some public libraries have a Technology Whisperer volunteer role to help people navigate digital information and technology. I think this is a great idea to bridge generational gaps in information literacy. Many young adults who didn’t grow up with access to computers can benefit from this kind of assistance as well.

I remember offering courses on how to use email and locating business sources online back when we used Netscape Navigator browsers 25 years ago. So much more is available today, but the principles remain the same: Teach, encourage, and offer guidance. When including digital literacy outreach efforts in libraries, think of the similarities with traditional literacy outreach: Some people are great readers, and some need extra educational assistance to comprehend what is on the page. Similarly, some people embrace technology's benefits quickly, and others need help learning email etiquette and tasks. We are there to help.

The libraries of yesteryear emphasized quiet, solitary spaces for individuals to reflect. Most libraries today maintain "quiet zones" for those who need a place to read, reflect, and learn. However, these libraries have also designed collaborative spaces for learners of all ages to participate in and learn from experiences with others having a similar interest. Strategic plans for libraries should include statements about the value of promoting both information literacy and lifelong learning. These have been principles that our profession has embraced long before the first computer appeared in a library. Information literacy involves the ability to locate important resources, determine their value, and allow them to provide context. Lifelong learning happens as libraries provide thought-provoking resources for patrons of all ages, and for educational and recreational purposes. Newer technologies have expanded our collections and outreach beyond the physical building more than ever, but have not changed the importance of our mission.
