I have found that using social media before, during, and after each conference that I attend has helped me to connect with attendees and generate a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) among those who may have wanted to attend. For instance, during my first SHRM Annual Conference, I had no prior connections, but managed to make a number of them through social media. This, in turn, helped me to make real-life connections during the conference and I left with a number of trusted friends and colleagues in the industry. Not too shabby for a self-proclaimed introvert!

I think that the problem that most of us make regarding attending conferences is that we dont prepare our mindset. The mistake we make is that we go in with the purpose of "give and get mindset". (Giving out our business cards to as many people as we can and vise-versa getting as many as we can.) We need to understand that networking is not just about getting a vast number of contacts, its about the quality of the connections we make. If you focus on trying to form a smaller and more useful connection, it will more likely lead to a mutually beneficial collaboration that can be blessed with long-term professional growth for you and your contact. Remember, your network is your net worth!

Before going to an event find out who is attending, and who are the people you want to talk to. Do your research on their projects, blogs and company news.
