If you think of the idea of framing a shot, the 2 dimensional xy and size of your subject. Aperture allows for you to set the depth or third position of the subject in frame. It tells the viewer where to look. It is one of the top 5 most important aspects of fundamental video story telling.

There are multiple ways of using aperture priority mode to create unique videos, and as a filmmaker, these 3 are usually my go-to with ease; * You get to determine the aperture or f-stop, where you can either set your depth of field to be shallow and isolate subjects, hence achieving that cinematic look (I love this, especially for interviews) or vice versa - increase your depth and have more detail in focus *Best for shooting in low light conditions, especially with the wide aperture in AV mode, allowing more light to hit the sensor *My all-time favourite - allowing me to blur the background and shift focus from one subject to another Of course, Av has its limitations, but it is my go-to mode sometimes.

While Aperture Priority mode is great for photographers who want to keep their Aperture constant and allow the camera to change the shutter and ISO to get the correct image exposure, I wouldn't recommend doing the same for video. Here is why, with video frame rates you want your control your shutter speed to get the desired look, also under certain artificial lighting conditions you may experience flickering and the only way to get rid of that is changing your shutter speed to a slow one.

I don't think I've ever used A or Av priority in anything I've filmed. Cameras have base ISO(s) and FPS/180 shutter rule are vital to create a pleasing image. Leaving that choice up to the camera is ill advised. The only semi-auto setting I've ever used in video is shutter priority for a very specific effect.

The good thing about the Aperture Priority (Av) setting is that you can quickly change the aperture when shooting in difficult conditions i.e. where perhaps the sun keeps getting covered by clouds.In video mode, shutter speed is less important as this is overshadowed largely by frames per second that you select. In Av, close ups with a shallow depth of filed give your videos a unique perspective especially when shooting with a prime lens, say a 50mm f1.8

Using aperture priority by utilising a shallow depth of field, particularly with interview subjects, is a great way to draw the viewer to where you want their attention to land. Equally a smooth focus pull from an object to the interview subject can be effective too if done well. Importantly, don’t get too formulaic and try a few different approaches.

Study each element until you know just what each does and why. Take your time. On rules of thumb, there are a lot of them out there. If you take the time to learn the real rules, you'll know who to listen to.

Setting up for camera in this way is going to give you a base layer for all of your photos but it does mean that you shouldn't b actively making adjustments to make sure that your photos are turning out the way you planned!

Mostly I do weddings, I would not dream of using Av in an uncontrolled situation. Example key moments in a wedding ceremony, for instance when the best man speaks. Those are best shot manually; however, in a controlled environment I would use the mode to make my subject stand out. Be it a product or model, basically more to guide the eye and to blur out anything in the background. It gives a nice depth of field, also given me amazing results post editing.

Also, be mindful of how aperture changes affect your shutter speed. Adjusting your ISO can compensate and maintain the desired exposure if you notice motion blur, especially in fast-moving scenes. Incorporating neutral density (ND) filters can also be beneficial, particularly in bright conditions, allowing you to use a wider aperture without overexposing your shot.

Your aperture setting controls how much of your frame is in focus. A low aperture such as f/2.8 will help you emphasise your subject and create a professional-looking blurry background. If you want to make sure as much of your scene is in focus as possible, use a high aperture like f/10 or f/22.
