You don’t always need a wine fridge; choose a place that is cool, doesn’t fluctuate in temperature too much and is away from light.

Temperature: Wine should be stored at a consistent temperature between 45°F and 65°F (7°C and 18°C). Fluctuations in temperature can cause the wine to expand and contract, potentially damaging the cork and affecting the flavor. Humidity: Relative humidity levels should be around 70-80%. This prevents the corks from drying out and maintains their integrity, preventing air from seeping into the bottles. Light: Wine should be stored away from direct light, especially sunlight and fluorescent fixtures, as UV rays can degrade the wine and alter its flavor. Dark or tinted bottles help protect wine from light exposure.

Avoid Temperature Extremes: Keep wine away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and areas prone to temperature changes, such as a kitchen or laundry room. A constant temperature around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) is considered ideal for long-term storage.

Ask any bartender in the industry what they do with open bottles of wine. The answer is make sure the cork is on tightly and put it in the refrigerator. The next day, perfectly fine.

Temperature is key to wine storage; warmer temperatures can accelerate a wine’s ageing. Ideally store a wine around 12 degree Celsius for long term storage. If not possible, find the coolest place in the house that has a stable temperature to ensure the wines integrity.

Humidity is an issue as humid environments can also lead to mould growth. A small dehumidifer or air conditioner in the cellar or basement is a good investment.

Not all bottles need to be stored horizontally; like screw caps and sparkling (as the CO2 will protect). However wines sealed with corks will benefit from horizontal store to keep the cork wet and minimise it from drying out and allowing oxygenation. Some may worry about cork taint but so long as that cork never had cork taint to begin with all will be fine.

Any bottles of wine closed with screw caps can be stored vertically. Always check bottles for any leakage from time to time..

Horizontal storage is less relevant now many bottles have screw cap (stelvin) closures, but still important for any wine with corks.

This is simply incorrect. The best thing you can do is leave your wine resting without moving it. You WANT your sediment to form a line on one side of the bottle, and the longer it sits still, the more effectively this is achieved. When you open the wine, stand the bottle up for a few hours first, and allow any loose sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle. The rest will stay stuck to the side as you pour, providing that you keep the sediment side down, and pour gently into a decanter. This is classic advice--not sure why this site is suggesting something else. And I always store my wines with the front lable up--that way I always know the sediment is on the side with the back lable.

I don’t think rotating the bottles is really necessary or preferable. Any older red wines should be stored upright for at least 24 hours and decanted prior to service.

I concur with the previous comment, very good red wine especially should not be moved. With sediment you should gently place the bottle up right for 30 minutes, then decant slowly. Leaving a small amount of wine with sediment in the bottle.

If your collection is large enough to warrant it, an app or program to inventory the collection is handy. It's also an easy and fun way to track how wines change overtime and to log when you've opened special ones.

The best solution is to buy more than one bottle! That way you can taste the wine as it ages, and make your own, educated decisions. If you only buy one bottle, you may open it too early....or too late. Or, worst of all, when it is perfect--and then you'll wish you had a few more bottles!

This is where buying by the case is a great idea. Open bottles overtime and see how they evolve. You'll know when a wine has reached its peak for your taste and that's when you should add the rest of that case to the 'drink soon' list. Buying by the case also enables you to hold a bottle of each vintage back for a later vertical tasting which can be fun and informative.

Start of slow finding wines you like, then as mentioned above start buying 3-4 (or more) of wines you like. Let a few bottles age and open later. Always nice to keep a tasting journal. Describe the flavors and make notes when the wine softens. This helps understanding what you like and helps when you want to age more.

Nothing beats Argon has coverage. There are commercially available systems, or like me, you can build your own using special bottle tops, a gas regulator and some plastic tubing.

Store in conditions of low humidity and low light, at the proper temperature for the kind of wine (red, white, etc.) Be sure to mark your bottles with the date opened. Open new bottles as needed. Good luck.
