1.Make sure the rock you are observing is a sedimentary rock 2. It should have well defined bedding - either colour or mineralogical banding 3. See the spacing between 2 beds. Try to follow them across the length of the outcrop. 4.Crossbedding look like titled/slanting lines joining top and bottom beds. Try to find them . 4. If found, take orientation data and plot rose diagram to get general orientation of sediment flow in the area

Once you build this analysis, then start looking for the orientations of cross beds Afterwards, remove the structural dip to find out the true orientation of cross beds This will provide insights of paleocurrent directions

Understanding and knowledge of cross-bed relationships in the field, e.g., small scale cross-bedding, is beneficial once you start analyzing and interpreting seismic data. Unfortunately, seismic resolution does not permit small-scale resolution of cross-bedding yet, but some large features, e.g., clinoforms, are similar to cross-beds. Therefore, understanding the depositional environments different types of cross-beds may form and seeing them with you naked eye, will only make you a more thoughtful and resourceful geoscientist. So, take your time to admire these features in an outcrop, understand them, and they will help you when thinking about the subsurface.

Find cross beds in outcrops that’s the easiest visualization of these features If rocks are not exposed to the surface then there are other means to do that For example if one works in an oil and gas industry then, he/she may have access to drilled cores if not cores then Formation Micro Imagers (FMI) may help to identify the crossbeds
