In my experience, both within the same organization and within different ones, the leader must be flexible on his/her style. One style doesn’t fit all needs, all the time. The leaders have to be skilled enough to be humble and firm. Compassionate and aggressive. Always understanding the business and demanding on achieving the goals. Must inspire the Team.

Before Everything, Be a follower They will likely have more empathy and genuine concern for their team members when they eventually rise and take on a leadership position. At one point, they were in the same place as their current subordinates. Because of their history, they understand the challenges of the job and know what kind of leadership they would have liked to have when they were a follower. Starting as a follower, rather than immediately being thrust into a leadership position, also creates more opportunities for learning and growth. If one has never done this, they might struggle to cope with the challenges of leadership — even if they have the genetic predisposition to be a great leader.

In my younger years I was eager to be recognized by my technical skills, more than by my people skills. Then, as I was accomplishing professional success, I started to realize that my technical skills, logic and systematic thinking were pretty good but I was also very successful working with people, improving the talent of my teams and that is the more important attribute I have to achieving success. The leader must be intelligent, business savvy and technically skilled, but to really achieve greatness, must develop very strong people skills. That can be learned too.

One thing I've found helpful, is to realize you cannot be great at everything. Start there. To be truly adaptable, you've had to put in the work [self], consistently, in an ongoing effort.
